JokeDeity,

Is everyone just not using Ublock for some reason? I never seem to see any of these things and I feel like I just followed a link to Know Your Meme fairly recently.

lemmiter,

Aww!! If they say it so cutely, I might disable adblocker only for that site.

This makes me want to unblock their ads even less

Hupf,

Anti-adblocking level: crimes against humanity

The Internet sucked before ad blockers. In the 1990s, web sites would spawn several ad windows. Sometimes, they would spawn pop-UNDER windows as well, so when you closed your browser, you had a nice big porn window left on your desktop. Advertisers abused the hell out of visitors and if you complained about it, their response was basically, “HA HA! F*CK YOU! HERE’S ANOTHER AD!”

They could have played nice. But once they had a chance to make free money, greed and sh*tty behavior ruled the day. This is how programs like Web Washer were born.

LemmyIsFantastic,

God forbid you pay for the resources you use. Freeloaders.

janAkali, (edited )

How much their ad-free tier costs? Can I pay without them tracking me? No? Then fuck you (website owners), I will be freeloading and will advertise freeloading.

Btw, use uBlock origin on Firefox, I haven’t seen one of these annoying screens in a while.

Edit: uh oh

LemmyIsFantastic,

Oh no, they keep my IP address. And my location after explicit permission, what will I ever do?!!!

I do not give one shit about minor crap like this. They need to pay people, keep the site going, and make some money on top of that.

If you don’t like it, perhaps just don’t use it instead of freeloading and leeching?

Neato,

Lol. Google is hard up for cash?

LemmyIsFantastic,

They would be without ads.

RickyRigatoni,

Give me your location.

LemmyIsFantastic,

Incorporate, publish a ToS, and offer me something of value. I’m happy to oblige.

I probably wouldn't mind ads as much if they'd just go back to the old days of being an image delegated to a rectangular box at the top of the screen instead of coming up with a million and one ways to be fucking invasive and eat all of my RAM.

netchami,

Use Firefox, LibreWolf or Mull with uBlock Origin to bypass this shit.

Catweazle,
@Catweazle@vivaldi.net avatar

@netchami @FrenLivesMatter, or better, along with uBO, install Tamper-, Greasy or ViolentMonkey with this script, that solve the problem compleetly

https://greasyfork.org/en/scripts/477725-youtube-iframe-adblocker

gaael,

TIL ViolentMonkey exists (only knew about Grease) and it makes me kind of happy to think about an enranged monkey beating shitty websites into shape.

Thank you !

netchami,

uBlock Origin has built-in bypass mechanisms. No extra userscripts required. Other extensions or scripts might interfere with uBO though. You also need to use Firefox or a Firefox fork like LibreWolf because Chrome soon won’t support MV2 anymore which is required for proper ad-blocking.

Catweazle,
@Catweazle@vivaldi.net avatar

@netchami, yes, the same as I have in the Vivaldi adblocker, but this is a continuo game of Cat and Mouse and uBO need to be updated almost dayly if it want to work, because YT anti-adblocker do it too.
This script works different, YT don't even know that you watch the video with this, it's like a front-end in the same YT page.

netchami,

Ok that sounds interesting, I’m gonna check it out

Catweazle,
@Catweazle@vivaldi.net avatar

@netchami, anyway I've found a good(maybe the best) substitute for YT, take also an look on this, I love it.

https://omega.gg/MotionBox/

netchami,

I’ve seen this recommendation a couple of times. In my opinion, the MotionBox UI just looks terrible. I prefer Piped or Invidious for watching YouTube. You can use these in combination with LibRedirect to automatically redirect all YouTube links to these alternative front-ends. FreeTube is pretty good if you need a desktop app. I love LibreTube on Android, NewPipe is another option. There’s also Yattee with this guide on iOS and SmartTubeNext on Android TV.

Catweazle,
@Catweazle@vivaldi.net avatar

@netchami, well the UI isn't a problem, less in fullscreen, front-end like Piped, Invideous, PokeTube and others a lot of times fails because the instance is down or well, no couldn't skip the YT block, no such problems in MotionBox, apart it can access videos and music from almost all streaming platforms, even from TikTok and Facebook, not only from YT.
Yes, the UI isn't to anyone's taste, but the operation is impeccable and blazing fast.

netchami,

Piped has some issues because Google tries to IP-ban all Piped instances, but Invidious actually pulls the content through the client, not on the server so it should work flawlessly. I also never had any issues with FreeTube.

Catweazle,
@Catweazle@vivaldi.net avatar

@netchami, well, FreeTube also is nice, I used it before, but I changed it, because more and more Videos are inplayable (YT also knows FreeTube). Invidious, yes, works fine most of the time (yewtube works the best), CloudTube is dead, PokeTube also works fine and even permits to download the video (mp4 or mp3),

netchami,

YT also knows FreeTube

But they can’t really do anything about it, unless they start requiring you to log in in order to watch videos…

They sent a cease and desist letter to Invidious, but that’s all they can do. It’s practically impossible to block Invidious because it’s completely decentralized. The Invidious instances only pull metadata, the video stream is actually pulled in by the client.

Catweazle,
@Catweazle@vivaldi.net avatar

@netchami, i know, that is the problem from front-ends which use the YT API, they can be blocked, Invideous no, but FreeTube and others do, not a problem of decentralized or no, YT only need to blok the API and thats all, folks. With Invidious the only problem are the stability of the diferent instances. Motionbox use an another approach and also don't use the API.

netchami,

FreeTube doesn’t use the YouTube API. Quote from their website:

FreeTube grabs data by scraping the information it needs (with either local methods or by optionally utilizing the Invidious API).

Neither Invidious, nor Piped, NewPipe or FreeTube use the YouTube API.

NewPipe has a component called NewPipeExtractor which scrapes the data from YouTube.

LibreTube uses Piped which uses the NewPipeExtractor.

Invidious scrapes the data from YouTube.

FreeTube can either scrape the data from YouTube or use Invidious.

Your loss, man.

Werbert,

Use something else 😜

Dettweiler42,

It’s simple. You block the adblocker blocker. There’s usually an option for “enable adblocker blocker blocker” in your adblocker options.

dai,

Oh man, that’s when they activate the ad blocker blocker blocker.

no UwU

Thcdenton,

Someone on here mentioned the ekill plugin. Its a great way to make those modals fuck off.

Necrosynthetik,

I actually have a story involving GirlVinyl. She had my best friend kicked out of DEFCON one year because he showed up and did meet-and-greets with some of the women from the porno he had made and was selling, which was themed around naked women teaching you to hack.

Diabolo96,

Who’s girlvinyl ? What any of this is related to an anti-adblock pop-up ? Is the hacking teaching session worth it to actually learn the skill ?

cm0002,

I seem to see this “powered by Admiral” popup on lots of other websites.

Whatever this Admiral company tech is, it’s the only one that’s been able to detect my Ad blocking in a long time, has anyone been able to defeat it yet?

LemmyFeed,

I’ve been seeing it on more and more sites. Some even won’t let you continue

harry_balzac,

Ran into that a few days ago for the first time. I decided to disable for that site just to see how many ads and to see if the content was worth the effort.

First, it was a bunch of ads. Secondly, the content was good but not that good. I enabled and searched anew.

gullible,

One of the positives of the AI ad page shitshow defining current search engines is that pirating written content has never been easier. In all likelihood, there’s a full site rip visible by simply searching for the contents of an article, recipe, book, whatever. Bonus, no ads.

glibg10b,

Or just zap the popup away with uBlock Origin’s element zapper (the lightning bolt)

Potatos_are_not_friends,

Sounds like a fun challenge to create a filter for that.

If anything, it’s probably some WordPress plugin or uses a cdn. Cut the head off the JavaScript, and we got ourselves another popup blocked.

name_NULL111653,

continue without disabling

stevedidwhat_infosec,

Literally, of all the ad blocker blocking techniques, this is the most gentle.

Also pro tip if you use umatrix, 9 times out of 10 you can just block the main domain/websites XHR stuff and poof gone

And009,

UMatrix can sometimes feel overwhelming. But I’m glad it exists

praise_idleness,

Aside from being cringe, this I can very much understand. It’s not that the ad itself is so bad. It’s them being data hog and making shit unreadable to the point where literally there are sprinkles of useful(or not so much) information here and there. I can understand this kind of popups. Even the cheapest VPSs are not free. Can’t really blame if there’s a continue w/o disabling.
