Okay. Interesting. Moving files from Dropbox creates placeholder files that are empty but take up space. There's a little cloud symbol beside the files in the dropbox directories, but they refused to download. Sheesh. Luckily, the files exist online. I've logged on to the online dropbox and downloaded all my files to my hard disk in a separate directory as a backup. I'm trying bypassing the dropbox refused to sync issue by signing out of dropbox and orphaning the current directories. Signing on again, but creating new dropbox directory tree on disk that must be downloaded again from the #dropbox#cloud.Hoping that this fixes the #sync problems I'm having between platforms, at least from the Mac perspective.
And Bam! Less than 10 minutes later, #dropbox has laid down all the files from the #cloud in the new directories. #Scrivener opens the previously damage project (because dropbox had refused to download things) with everything consistent with the iPhone version. Yay!
Users completely underestimate how risky the use of #cloud storage is, which is very frustrating. But to be fair, the corporations don't really warn them.
I'm not saying #cloud storage can never be used, but if you have to use it, there are some rules:
▶️ Assume everything will be nuked tomorrow
▶️ Assume the state is watching your activity
▶️ It must not be your primary storage. You must have at least 1 full copy on devices you control
▶️ All files in cloud storage are basically public
It's not just Google, of course. When you trust your data to ANY #cloud service, you can get rugpulled at any moment without warning. Remember, they have the de-facto control over the data, and you don't.
What “hybrid cloud” actually means to us. Where it works well, where it creates challenges, where the control plane should live, how to abstract differences between platforms to make workloads more suitable to be used in a hybrid setup, maintaining compliance across clouds, and guarding against security vulnerabilities in containerised dependencies.
Today I learned: #nix-infect, to transform a vm from another distribution into #NixOS, mostly for cloud providers that don't offer this option! (Including #DigitalOcean and #hetzner). I am going to use it! :)
Wirklich unglaublich, was man da liest. Da werden viele Firmen teures Lehrgeld zahlen, bis sie wegen Kostenexplosion vielleicht doch wieder in eigenes Wissen und Know-How investieren, sofern noch möglich ...
I get so, so tired of how some people have a knee-jerk reaction about how the big #cloud companies "steal" #opensource software. No, no, they don't. They often help build it.
