This is the first time I’ve ever seen someone mention the Onion and journalism in the same sentence instead of a satire site. I’m not saying it’s less legitimate than the traditional outlets, just thought they were always proudly mocking news outlets, not competing with them.

The onion sits in a legal gray area because they use the real names of people and organizations.

If they can no longer make satire then the news orgs will we unable to say anything but the status quo. At that point the media will be controlled by the government. Freedom of the press means that a reporter can say what they want even if it isn’t liked or agreed with.

They are absolutely the press just as much as you can be the press. We need to protect our freedom do publish our beliefs even if they are disagreeable or satire.

The existence of the onion is evidence that anyone can publish news even if it isn’t in line with the mainstream media
