I would love an electric moped that goes upto a max speed of 40 - 45mph safely, as a complement to my bigger #motorcycle. Instead my option is a class 3 #ebike which is ok but only goes to 28mph. I already have an M class license and ofc the moped wouldn’t be able to use bike paths, but if it can go upto 45 i would feel far more comfortable in residential settings riding alongside cars
@Cmastication@yuvipanda there's really not enough motor for 40mph in most e-bikes. 1000W can get to 28 on flat/downhill with no headwind but you need about 1kW more to get to 40
@enobacon@Cmastication yeah, but this is mostly because there are regulations preventing them from being classed as e-bikes if you put a bigger motor. With a bigger motor, they'd need to be classed as motorcyles / mopeds, need a VIN, pay for registration, have an M class license, etc...
@yuvipanda@Cmastication yes you can get 2-3kW "e-bike motors" and make something with or without pedals that would need licensing to be road legal. But you need 2-3x wire or 2-3x voltage to deliver that power, which puts it into a heavier class of components than most e-assist bicycles. More weight, heavier brakes, tires, suspension, etc. Not simply a mod to the limiters as suggested, because 1kW (~1.3hp) won't easily reach 40mph due to wind resistance.
