Spotify officially demonetises all tracks with under 1,000 streams

This is just an insanely bone-headed move that is so pointless.

These artists don't even get paid that much money, and yet Spotify wants to cut off their revenue.

I'm done with Spotify. In fact, I think I'm flat-out done with music streaming services. All of them are exploitative. back to buying digital albums for me.

@soheb This, and "AI" shows that the capital class REALLY hates creative people.

@soheb I cancelled my subscription last year and have been using that money to buy albums from Bandcamp (mostly during Bandcamp Fridays so more money goes to the bands) and tickets for local concerts

@soheb

Alternate title should be "Spotify pirates music for profit"

@soheb If I pay someone $10 on Bandcamp, they get at least $8.50, $10 if it's on Bandcamp Friday.

@soheb They totally screwed up music, and the podcast business model. Some of my favorite podcasts are going, gone directly because of them. NEVER EVER

@soheb shit, I like their service, and have so much "liked" stuff there, but between the millions to Rogan, and that, i'll have to choose an alternative, why can't we have nice things? 😔

@soheb @Penguinflight Demonetise - what a shitty made up expression.

@soheb Re "back to buying digital albums for me", do you have suggestions on how to check that the artists actually get paid for these?

soheb,
@soheb@pkutalk.com avatar

@nemobis I haven't got concrete evidence, but I do know musicians rarely complained about the iTunes/MP3 downloading era, but are now complaining en-masse about the modern day streaming era (mostly about how opaque the payment system is as it is the hands of big tech rather than between the artist and the label).

nemobis,
@nemobis@mamot.fr avatar

@soheb The number of streams is indeed harder to verify than the number of album purchases.

However, many things happened in the meanwhile, including the fact that labels and publisher optimise the catalogues submitted to Spotify etc. to maximise the percentage kept by middlemen. Record companies keep 10 times what the artists get.

@nemobis @soheb i sell music on bandcamp & essentially one bandcamp sale earns as much as literal thousands of spotify streams.

nemobis,
@nemobis@mamot.fr avatar

@dt Thanks. Unfortunately, 1000 times a Spotify stream would be less than 10 % of the price of an album. So what percentage goes to you? Do you publish directly or did you give some rights to collecting societies, labels, publishers and whatnot? Do you own all of the rights (music, lyrics, performance, record)?

@soheb

dt,
@dt@mastodon.top avatar

@nemobis @soheb not sure of the exact percentage but it's over 80% of the sale price. i deal with bandcamp directly but that's because i self-publish. a label would split this revenue with the artist according to the contract they signed.

either way, there's absolutely no comparison in terms of revenue between streaming & digital download. unless you have a bona fide hit on your hands, streaming is legalized theft.

nemobis,
@nemobis@mamot.fr avatar

@dt @soheb Agreed. 80 % is nice, is there a way to find out which artists are self-published?

@soheb Fuck Spotify. Seriously. Glad I switched to Deezer. Yes, it does not have all the features I liked, but I am not going to sit idle while Spotify is being an asshat.

soheb,
@soheb@pkutalk.com avatar

@lumiukko I wonder how much Deezer pays in royalties, and if it is available in the UK...

Something for me to research on...

(I doubt any streaming company pays decent royalties. It's a bit weird to have £10/mo for unlimited music and not have someone shafted along the way)

@soheb Wow! 😵
I was also considering leaving, I guess that will do it.
