Can anyone recommend a free VPN to access the USA from Europe? Isn't for security reasons, just getting around stupid geofencing once in a while...

Could it be that the shift from talking about "Linked Open Data" to talking about "Knowledge Graphs" has been accompanied by a shift from decentralization to centralization also in the scholarly infrastructure space? These questions keep popping up in my head and maybe people with more inside can confirm or dispel my concerns. 1/2

I don't understand why, after so many, many years of the Chrome extensions website looking like a proper app store, and after quite a few years of extensions using the same kinda technology as Chrome extensions, the Firefox extension site still looks just really terrible, and not having anything like the kinds of massive, app-like extensions that has!? While at the same time is spending money on all kinds of strange stuff. I also never see anyone complain about this?

nemobis,
@nemobis@mamot.fr avatar

@DORpapst @forteller Same. I never manage to find anything in the Chrome extension store, every good result drowns in a hundred more irrelevant and/or nonfree options. I usually end up using GitHub to search Chrome extensions.

@stefan I thought there was a bot somewhere linking the most interacted posts but I can't find any such thing. @TrendingBot posts about hashtags and looks at mastodon.social only.

I guess the #FediBuzz relay (https://relay.fedi.buzz) may help in fetching the activities, though their own https://fedi.buzz/ only exposes the trending hashtags.

My desktop PC's CPU/APU soon turns 10. Can I reduce my energy use with a new one? Turns out, probably not.

I'm only ever starved for CPU when Thunderbird is busy.

A newer APU has about twice the single-threaded speed for the same TDP of 65 W (downclockable to 45 W), for an upfront cost about 50 % higher than in 2015. It makes sense if I can save an average of 10 W for 10 years. I'd confirm with plug-in power meter over a few days.

Will the shop accept my returns if power savings are too low?

nemobis,

@osma Yes... I hope my next laptop will be ARM (or RISC-V?!) but for my primary desktop I think I want something more conservative.

Continued attack on the public domain by the Italian court system, ruling that the Florence gallery that owns Michelangelo's David also owns "image rights" to the statue, can require licensing fees for any image depicting it, and can impose additional fines for presenting it in a distorted way: https://news.artnet.com/art-world/florence-gallerie-dellaccademia-wins-david-lawsuit-2313262, https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=40023471

It is perhaps important to note that the statue, created in 1504, was on outdoor exhibit in a public square in Florence until 1873, and a replica is still visible there.

I've madly reduced Libreboot 9020 prices:

https://minifree.org/product/libreboot-9020/

Intel i7-4790k, 32GB RAM, 1TB/2TB SSD. Choose Intel HD4600 / AMD Radeon RX6400 / RX 6600XT. GPU

Intel AX210 WiFi. Debian Linux, other distro or BSD of your choice.

Libreboot replaces proprietary BIOS/UEFI offering greater freedom; I lead the project and use sales to fund it.

Libreboot 9020 has PWM fan control now so fans are regulated. Runs much cooler without needing prior mods. Other costs cut, without reducing quality.

@whvholst Ahah you're in for a surprise, @libreleah will now explain how Brexit can't stop Minifree's exports. :)

Paying VAT etc. to customs is very easy in Finland but I've not yet managed to order anything from Minifree to test it out.

nemobis,
@nemobis@mamot.fr avatar

@libreleah @whvholst IOSS works quite well in Finland, as long as the merchant remembers to write it somewhere on the package, otherwise it gets on hold. Some sellers don't even know they have IOSS because their platform takes care of it (e.g. eBay, AbeBooks). But if that happens you just enter the tracking code in the Tulli website, state how much VAT you've already paid etc., and the packet gets released without fees.

nemobis,
@nemobis@mamot.fr avatar

@libreleah @whvholst I noticed there are quite a few companies offering this kind of intermediation, like https://www.euify.eu/faq. It seems to work fine but if something goes wrong you have two companies to deal with instead of one. So indeed it would be better to simplify in such a way that you can handle it directly.

nemobis,

@De_Treias Each donation to a separate recipient creates a separate charge. To reduce fees, you can decide to make an annual donation for x years (paid in advance). Otherwise renewal is manual unless set to automatic.

Liberapay can't hold money for you, so you can't charge a wallet and then draw from it. Every payment goes straight from you to the recipient.

It's still better than Patreon where your credit card will be inundated with transactions every month.

nemobis,
@nemobis@mamot.fr avatar

@De_Treias Yeah. Instead of making monthly donations to 12 projects you can make an annual donation to a different project every month.

It remains unavailable on Amazon as well as the Finnish and Polish shops where it was previously on sale. Funnily, it's still available in at least one Italian online shop.
