https://secondhandsongs.com is an impressive resource for song translations and adaptations. (Though probably driven by royalties arbitrage needs.)

For example, it has an impressive 450 versions of "Solidarity forever":

(Spoiler: the Finnish version is the best!)

If only my knowledge of EU law had the desired impact this fast every time 🙂

My father wanted to pay a EDF French electricity bill from a Belgian bank account, and was told that this was not possible because the bank was outside France

I formulated a stern email to EDF for him, in French, stipulating this was not allowed as a reason within the Single European Payment Area (SEPA), and within a few hours they relented in a grovelling email!

After 5 years I've updated the book wishlist price catalog:

AbeBooks has prices only for 550k books out of 1015k this time. There's still a lot of low hanging fruit.

One thing changed: / became by far the biggest force in the market in the EU. They're 3 times bigger than the next biggest.

I've finally started browsing 's Capital. It's quite accessible. You can sample a few pages here and there depending on your interest. The first 30 or 100 pages of introductory chapters probably give a better general idea of than some of the textbooks most used in courses.

Worrying: had its non-profit status revoked in Germany.
https://blog.joinmastodon.org/2024/04/mastodon-forms-new-u.s.-non-profit/

Hopefully this is an egregious mistake by the authorities and gets overturned quickly. In the meanwhile, it must be difficult to do any financial planning without knowing what the tax liabilities will be.

A year ago I recommended asking for help from people with more experience.

Going at it alone with a new USA entity sounds like the opposite direction was chosen.

nemobis,
@nemobis@mamot.fr avatar

@renchap Thanks. Yes, I know the 501(c)(3) plans were mentioned already in the 2022 annual report. Let's hope you're right about the gGmbH status but people have different expectations. I don't think a GmbH would be good enough. The main issue is profit redistribution.

There's a giant header "Social networking that's not for sale" on https://joinmastodon.org/ . You can't honestly continue saying that if you're a GmbH. (I've never checked whether it's true for a gGmbH; I just trusted it was.)

Faced with a collective action problem, it helps to pick a small group with the autonomy to change their ways.
In scholarly publishing, there are about 8-12 million authors who are not even free to decide where they publish.
There are only a few thousand editorial boards where editors have complete freedom to choose where they work.
"Save editors time."
"Time is scholar’s most precious resource."
"Focus on the community."
"Journals are communities. "

nemobis,
@nemobis@mamot.fr avatar

@danielbingham I'm going to take this as a "no". There are hundreds of ostensibly democratic membership-based entities our there which run paywalled journals. Based on previous datasets like https://zenodo.org/records/8429014 , you might be able to find whether any of them fit your criteria, and how direct voting helped (or not) with the proposed goals.

nemobis,
@nemobis@mamot.fr avatar

@danielbingham Yes, my point is that nowhere in diamond OA recommendations have I ever seen the number of voting members flagged as a relevant criterion/tool. So I'm very curious to see cases where that helped. (I've not looked that far.)

I just had to reference this AR6 table 5.8 at work. Scientific consensus on gets explained away all the time because uncertainties, meanwhile a wildly untested business as usual scenario is assumed ok because number go up.
