I forget exactly when I bought this HP laptop I'm currently using. It was at least 5 years ago, and I grabbed it for school. It has Windows 10 that came on it preinstalled. I used it for a bunch of school stuff over the last few years, never had any issues.
Today, I'm trying to mess around in Excel, I'm logged into my Microsoft account like usual, and it's trying to tell me I have to pay now to keep using Excel? It just gives an option to pay or shut it down. After 5+ years of using legitimate, paid-for Microsoft Office products on here. SUCH weird garbage.
Super thankful for LibreOffice and being able to reset all my defaults to that.
I'm now hearing via @rtw and other folks that Microsoft is going to be pushing for subscription-based models for all their stuff (including things like my version of Windows/Office 10 that I paid for and have been paid off for 5+ years).
Microsoft is gonna get pushback on this if they're rolling it out everywhere. Some people will pay, sure. But many will find open source options (easily) like I have before and now will even more.
@jake4480@rtw I've heard this, too, about the video gaming industry. Normally, I don't run anything Windows, but some of the music software out there is great, and I needed at least one computer with a DAC connected to run 11. Plus, I like to keep my hand in a little for development purposes.
@wendigo@rtw and I mean, I kinda like Windows stuff, I'm okay with it, over Apple stuff, which I'm really just not into. My phone has always been Android or something other than Apple. I've only ever had 2 Apple things, a Performa as a kid (the family's) and an iMac maybe like 20 some years ago? That I didn't dig much. That's it. But I'm not about Microsoft's greed. Not that Apple isn't greedy and price-gouging hahaha. Basically, NO corporations are our friends, right?

sooo done with everyone having a subscription, man. Like I actually understand some SaaS fees where the product utilizes resources as a cost. But some software needs to be purchasable. Most of the big Windows updates I dont want or like.
@DanielTuttle@rtw right?? And Windows 10 (that I don't even like much) is CONSTANTLY nagging me to update to 11. I'm not gonna do it. I don't want to haha. Considering other options, I mean, this laptop isn't dead yet but it's on its way out. 11 looks like total garbage and I just don't even want any of it. I figure I'll do Linux on something probably.
@rtw oh wow yeah. It's not for me. It's ridiculous to suddenly pay for something that's totally yours and paid off. I'm not about it. Good luck, Microsoft. I think they're gonna have a lot of pissed off people haha
@jake4480 I know the xbox people are really pissed about them laying off the physical release division and the rumor that they’ll stop producing consoles as well. They just want everything to be Gamepass.
@rtw ah, yeah. I did GamePass exactly twice, I think when I had a discount or almost free- to try out games. When they put a discount on, sometimes I jump on, try a ton of games, and cancel hahaha
@jake4480 My HP laptop, about 5 years old now, recently pushed me a message that I can no longer get firmware updates. It offered to help me select a new laptop. 🤦♀️ I may put Linux on it and see if I can get firmware updates for a bit longer that way.
