A Nearly Complete List of Free + Open Source Games

hello, m/opensourcegames! i'd like to start this magazine off with a comprehensive list of Free/Libre/Open Source games so that people can find some fun new stuff to play.

libregamewiki has articles on nearly 700 games.

there's also this list of over 1500 open source games

i'll also list some of my favourite games that i think you would enjoy:

Roguelikes

nethack - the classic terminal roguelike. despite being one of the oldest open source games, it still receives updates periodically

Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead - what if nethack had a zombie apocalypse and guns and crafting and base building

Shattered Pixel Dungeon - beautiful pixel graphics, high replay value. also check out the other Pixel Dungeon forks (the original PD, Sprouted PD, many others)

hyperrogue - a roguelike set entirely within non-euclidean (hyperbolic) space. due to the strange geometry, this is a puzzle game as much as it is a roguelike

Factory / Tower Defense

Minudstry - play as a mech, refine resources, and defend your base from waves of enemies. this game has 2 campaign planets which are essentially 2 separate games.

shapez.io - build a factory which combines, cuts, and colors shapes.

Rhythm

osu!lazer - has 4 game modes: click the circles to the beat, hit the drums to the beat, catch the fruits (to the beat?), and mash the keyboard to the beat

Etterna - similar to osu!mania, but has a few additional features (rollls / mines) and more detailed score breakdown

Friday Night Funkin' - cute graphics and music

Strategy

Hedgewars - a turn based game where you try to knock off enemies with a huge arsenal of weapons

Action

Xonotic - a first person arena shooter. game modes include instagib, arsenal, and speedrunning

Voxel

Veloren - this voxel RPG has a massive world and beautiful graphics.

Minetest - a voxel game engine with lots of content. most of the servers and mods are based around the default minetest game, but also check out Nodecore, Exile, Loria, and other games in Minetest's ContentDB

what open source games do you like to play?

actual208,

I can recommend Endless Sky (apparently it's very similar to Escape Velocity if you are familiar with that but I've never played it). It's a 2D space sandbox about outfitting ships, ferrying passengers or cargo, trading, fighting off pirates (or becoming one yourself), and above all political intrigue and human/alien diplomacy. The best bit for me was the story and writing, which I rank at the second best out of all games I've seen so far. It will also interest you if you are into the sort of min-maxing puzzles that go like 'how can I fit the maximum amount of thrusters and guns subject to these mass and volume constraints while dealing with power consumption and heat'.
