Initiated in 1999, it aims to provide a complete game experience compatible with custom levels, music, and graphics from the DOOM community. Version 0.13.0, released on January 29, 2024, offers enhanced compatibility, removal of Boom features, bug fixes, and new content. This video shows Phase 1.

0.13.0 released, a retro on the classic 90s DOOM engine. Or maybe three retro fpses depending on if you count the two campaign wads and the wad as separate games under the same banner.

I started playing Freedoom Phase 2 with Doom 4 Vanilla from the beginning and it is a banger, I have to say. D4V makes the gameplay more dynamic and the textures work really well with Freedoom's architecture which is much richer than the original one (duh). I like subtle nods to the original maps. It feels familiar yet different.

But blood instead of water doesn't stop surprising me. It is probably the biggest change in the visuals. And lack of the window texture.

I played "Hostile Takeover," map 15 of Freedoom Phase 2, with Doom 4 Vanilla and it worked together very well. I tried liking Freedoom monsters but some of them, especially low-tiers, are hard to work with. But some maps are brilliant. Complex and with rich architecture. Furthermore, GZDoom's ambient occlusion improves the immersion.

There's a greater goal behind Freedoom's "just another mod" appearance that appeals directly to software freedom.

So finally I managed to edit and upload the tutorial on how to play the hottest Doom 2 mod of the year on Arch Linux.

If you really want a great horror experience that doesn't just try to spook you with jumpscares on every corner, get the mod, read the developer's journal for context, and play!
