Lurking.

(Note the cat’s collar, which is from birdsbesafe.com and is amazingly effective at stopping birdslaughter.)

@timbray ...cats hate this one simple trick...

TheSteve0,
@TheSteve0@data-folks.masto.host avatar

@timbray we have gone through several of those as well

u0421793,
@u0421793@functional.cafe avatar

@timbray do birds laugh?

timbray,
@timbray@cosocial.ca avatar

@u0421793 Dunno about the birds but we mock them regularly.

steevc,
@steevc@mastodon.org.uk avatar

@timbray My other half is concerned that our cat would be mocked. Do they suffer from shame?

timbray,
@timbray@cosocial.ca avatar

@steevc Can confirm: we laugh at them regularly.

eliasp,
@eliasp@mastodon.social avatar

@timbray does it also work for reptiles? The cats around here have basically eliminated the whole population of wall lizards in our garden. 😩

cdamian,
@cdamian@rls.social avatar

@eliasp
I have a similar question about rabbits. Though so far they have been alive when they arrived in the house.
@timbray

timbray,
@timbray@cosocial.ca avatar

@cdamian @eliasp Ours can still catch rats & mice, which we’re OK with. Couldn’t tell you about lizards.

eliasp,
@eliasp@mastodon.social avatar

@timbray this paper might provide some hints on whether it could/should work...
Will have to give it a read.

@timbray can confirm. Athena’s kill rate went from several a week to less than 1 a month. Helps that she seems to enjoy wearing it. Bells were ineffective.

@timbray

Is it made to break-away if it gets caught on something?

timbray,
@timbray@cosocial.ca avatar

@jonhendry We keep them pretty loose, loose enough that they lose them sometimes. Some of the lost ones come back, our neighbours have been trained. But we do have to order new ones every year or so.

jonhendry,
@jonhendry@iosdev.space avatar

@timbray

That's good. I am surprised if they don't make them with a break-away clasp, as are common on regular collars.

aulia,

@timbray didn’t realize it’s a cat with a red collar in a bush instead of a giant green hawk with red eyes

Joshfrai,
@Joshfrai@mastodon.social avatar

@timbray Seems like it would cause birds laughter.

Slatteryz,

@timbray How does it work?

timbray,
@timbray@cosocial.ca avatar

@Slatteryz
Lots of bright high contrast colors.
