Ship crews are a weird thing. During covid there were a lot of ships idle with crews stuck on board for months.

At least it's a big ship so they might be able to get away from each other when they want. And I think they can get some supplies delivered from shore.

When a app supports versions, it's really quite cool and useful. I wish more did.

jonhendry,

That's like a vague memory I have from a long-ago WWDC, like “was that ever a thing?”

Is there any documentation for what an app has to do to support it?

In March of 1997 WIRED Magazine published their cover story on how browsers might soon disappear as everyone would prefer stuff pushed to them instead of discovered via following links.

It was widely panned and browsers are still very much alive today but I have to say when I look at Instagram and TikTok, those are all-Push content apps and maybe WIRED got it a little bit correct?

Maybe one of those "tool balancers", spring-loaded cords hanging from the ceiling, supporting most of the weight of a drill or spot welder or whatever, as used in factories. Hook one on each wrist.

    I always wonder how much training WWDC presenters get, and how much electric shock is involved. The consistency is a little creepy.

    Mostly walks around wondering why nobody would talk to him as if they haven't seen what the media has done to their words already.

    So much of Musk's "visionary leadership" is classic mismanagement. He's not just nuking the one area in which he Tesla can lock-in market dominance (the EV chargers), he's doing it in the most chaotic manner possible, without any plan for going forward. https://electrek.co/2024/05/03/read-the-wild-email-tesla-is-sending-to-suppliers-amid-supercharger-chaos/

    I work nearly exclusively in UI atm, but… boy does Swift concurrency make me feel thick.

    jonhendry,
    @jonhendry@iosdev.space avatar

    @RobW

    Swift in general makes me feel thick because I'm always seeing constructs that don't make any sense; they generally turn out to be some more concise variant syntax for something, or else a closure, which I just haven't got the hang of recognizing yet - just “wtf is that?”

    That said I haven’t really used Swift yet so…

    jonhendry,

    TBH I'm probably just as rusty at ObjC after taking care of my parents and not coding for a long time.

    I probably shouldn't comment about programming at all at this point.

    The judge acknowledged in the order that $1,000 was likely insufficient but the law doesn't give him the discretion to set it higher.

    "In those circumstances, it would be preferable if the Court could impose a fine more commensurate with the wealth of the contemnor. In some cases that might be a $2,500 fine, in other cases it might be a fine of $150,000.” [But without that discretion jail may be necessary.]

    it's really quite a condemnation of voice-assistant UI that we have to memorize the names of all the lights and stuff

    there's no way to even ask it "what things can you turn on" or anything like that. you have to get that information from somewhere outside the UI.

    jonhendry,
    @jonhendry@iosdev.space avatar

    Voice assistants are like trying to play a text adventure game when you aren't familiar with the vocabulary and style of interaction of such games.

    I've been thinking about the times in my life when I felt the most alive/present/contented, and most of them have a feeling in common that I don't have a word for. It's like the opposite of the sort of numinous "I'm so small in the grand scheme of things" feeling. Like the world is not only metaphorically smaller but physically smaller. When I've felt this way in the past, I was more inclined to use terms like "nearby" or "right over there" to describe things that were quite far away...
