illyria817,

Thank you for the heads up! Haven’t quite figured out usenet yet (never used it before) but will at some point.

dfz0r,

Anyone know if they do black friday deals like nzbgeek etc? Maybe a paid lifetime?

hawxcross,

Probably my favorite indexer that I use although nzbfinder, nzbgeek, and nzbplanet have been just as good for me. Definitely recommend!

sPUG,

i often wondered about this site having now tried it gonna say i’m disappointed, with my news provider every file i tried to download has been dcma’d, with the other FREE and open sites i use this isn’t the case. I can pull files up to 10years old with no issues. I’m guessing they don’t use obfuscation when posting nzbs or their site has been compromised.

CoolYori,

Thanks for letting me know. I just signed up now.

Ganbat,

Do you have to have a specific Usenet provider to work with specific indexers? I still have no idea how Usenet works.

marx2k,

No, you don’t have to

crow,

Prowlarr is all I, and most people, will ever need.

stephfinitely,

Is there a tutorial on how to set this up on NZBget?

protput,

Nzbget is a downloader. Drunkenslug is a usenet indexer. You can’t configure an indexer in a downloader. You’re probably thinking about a usenet provider. Usenet providers need to be added in the configuration of your downloader.

A decent indexer costs money and a provider costs money.

To automate everything, you would want to take a look at Sonarr and Radarr.

Btw. I would recommend Sabnzbd over Nzbget anyway.

JoeBigelow,
@JoeBigelow@lemmy.ca avatar

Brb, subscribing to netflix

protput,

Once you have everything set up with sonarr, radarr, Plex, etc… You will have your own Netflix with all the content you want. And with minimal input of your own. Everything is automated. New episodes will automatically download. Movies will download as soon as they are available in your desired quality. It IS worth it.

Appoxo,

When you have everything set up you will pay the equivalent to Netflix 4K.

protput,

I would pay double of Netflix 4k if that meant I had everything from all streaming services. But realistically. You could just set everything up and share access to the plex server with friends and family and share the cost with them. It’s a win win in that case.

Appoxo,

This is just good cable with extra steps and input…IMO not worth it to pirate at that price.
just add stuff to watch later and switch subs of providers if enough accumulated.

protput,

To each their own I guess.

Whirlybird,

You don’t set indexers up on NZBGet, you set them up on Sonarr/Radarr/CouchPotato/etc. They watch your media library and will search the indexer (DrunkenSlug) when there should be a new episode/release (or to find missing ones). If it finds it on DrunkenSlug, it then passes that download over to NZBGet to download it using whoever your Usenet provider is.

chronicledmonocle,

What is this? A usenet place?

Zedstrian,

It's a private usenet indexer that periodically opens registrations; essentially the usenet equivalent of a private torrent tracker like TorrentLeech.

chronicledmonocle,

Nice. Thanks!

Waitwuhtt,

Thank you!

Now I host just gotta figure out how to use it lol. Last time I had anything to do with usenet, I still had hair.

skankhunt42,
@skankhunt42@lemmy.ca avatar

Get a provider. r/usenet has a good list in their wiki. This is the “seeder”.

Sabnzbd or NZBget is the software you’ll need to do the actual downloading. This is like utorrent/qbittorrent/what ever you kids use these days.

Sonarr/radarr to automate.

LocustOfControl,

I was going to point out the ⭐ bookmark feature, but I see you’re on kbin - I guess they don’t have that feature?

MrJukes,

Then once you have all that setup, overseerr to automate the automation.

abbadon420,

I’m sorry, but I’m *arr exclusive

ArcaneSlime, (edited )

Are these other services paid or free? Trying to figure out what the total cost is and see if I can afford it lol.

Follow up question, is it relatively safe to pay DS with non-crypto, like paypal? I assume yes but gotta ask.

skankhunt42,
@skankhunt42@lemmy.ca avatar

Indexers (like the torrent sites TPB, 1337x, etc) are not free. Some will let you get a free account, like DS, but you’re limited in downloads. They’ll give you .nzb (like .torrent) files.

Sab,nzbget, etc (like utorrent, qbitorrent) are free. They’re open source software to download the files you want utilizing the .nzb files.

Providers are paid. Usenet server, newsdemon, etc are the companies that host files for you to download. They’re basically like torrent “seeders” but it’s just one company and usually pretty fast. I don’t know of any free providers.

At minimum, you’ll have to pay for a provider. I got 80% off of one and I pay $37USD for a year. Others are ~$70CAD for a year. There is deals posted on reddit all the time so look around. You’ll never have to pay full price.

If you’re going to use Radarr or Sonarr (free, open source software) you should pay for an unlimited indexer, like DrunkenSlug, so you don’t hit the limits. I don’t know of any free unlimited ones. You can use the *arr’s with torrents but its not as good.

ArcaneSlime,

Thanks for the response!

Do you have a particular client (sabnzd/getnzb etc) you would reccomend?

In my limited research so far (at work trying not to get caught lol) it seems like r/usenet likes eweka so I’m thinking I may go with them, they boast “longest retention” and I like obscure shit, so sounds like the move for me, unless I’m missing something which is entirely possible, would you know if that one is good?

I just signed up for DS, but I’ll be paying for it probably friday, just gonna get the unlimited, the price diff is worth it and I like to download so I’d probably hit limits. Eweka isn’t the cheapest it looks like but it seems they have a deal right now.

As for the *arrs, do I need them, or can I just like, go to DS and search “Mars Needs Women” and click “download .nzb,” then unrar it if I have to and move it to my external for permanent storage like on a torrent site? I may get into them eventually but I’d really like to not have to do that, I need to set other shit up first. Some people I’m reading comments from around here and r/usenet (can’t comment on reddit though, no active acct) seem to suggest the *arrs are maybe necessary but I can’t quite figure out if they really are or not lol.

Thanks again for helping start my journey into usenet!

Do you have a particular client (sabnzd/getnzb etc) you would reccomend?

I use Kubernetes (k3s specifically) to host

  • image: linuxserver/sabnzbd:latest
  • image: linuxserver/sonarr:latest
  • image: linuxserver/radarr:latest
  • image: crazymax/rtorrent-rutorrent:latest (in the same pod with a wireguard container to a VPN provider)

so I guess I’d recommend sabnzbd. However, I’ve heard that others are “better”. I’ve had no problems with sab.

would you know if that one is good?

So, This is where I’m not 100% sure myself. I know there are a LOT of resellers and I’m not sure how up to date this map is but it’s worth looking at. Anything on the same backbone should have the same file available.

An EU server that observes NTD is suggested as per this post. From my understanding they’re slower to remove copyright infringing files. I only download linux ISOs so this doesn’t matter to me.

“longest retention” isn’t really a big deal. It seems that the hard to find and old shit are not on any Indexer I have. Meaning there’s not NZB file for me to even try to download… I usually fall back to Torrent and jackett but there’s also bin search that can turn up files some times.

A lot of people will get a primary provider for the year then buy a “block” of data from a different provider on a different backbone. You can set the priority in sab to only use the primary unless some files are missing, then look at the backup. Personally I have a yearly sub of NewsDemon (SUPER cheap offer so I cant leave) and usenetserver. Neither of them have 100% available requested articles. YMMV.

I just signed up for DS, but I’ll be paying for it probably friday, just gonna get the unlimited, the price diff is worth it and I like to download so I’d probably hit limits. Eweka isn’t the cheapest it looks like but it seems they have a deal right now.

I have no experience with DS but everyone seems to love it. I’ll be using the free account when my other indexers do not have what I’m looking for… nzbgeek and nzbplanet have lifetime accounts and nzb.su seems to be another good one people suggest.

I just like, go to DS and search “Mars Needs Women” and click “download .nzb,” then unrar it if I have to and move it to my external for permanent storage like on a torrent site?

The process would be

  • go to DS
  • search for whatever
  • Download .nzb
  • add the .nzb to sabnzbd
  • wait for sabnzbd to download it from your provider.
  • if it was succeessful, extract files, move to where you want it.
  • else, find a new .nzb and add it to sab and hope that one works.

As for the *arrs, do I need them,

you don’t need the *arrs. if you do not get them, then I’d suggest staying with the free DS account. The paid is more for automation.

seem to suggest the *arrs are maybe necessary but I can’t quite figure out if they really are or not lol.

Usenet without the *arr’s is basically saying “I’ve paid for the bus but I’m going to walk”.

I do nothing. I sleep at night and go about my day. when I want to watch TV I open up Plex and go to “recently added” to see what the *arrs have got for me. I use to get my stuff manually but waking up Monday Morning to Futurama ready to watch is very nice. When someone says “have you seen XXX” I say nope but I’ll add it to my list. Open up *arr and add it. Couple hours later I have all of it. I’ll add a movie I want to see that’s not out yet. When it is, It’ll be in plex.

Happy to answer any more questions you have. Just ask away.

ArcaneSlime,

Thanks a lot, you’ve definitely helped me a bunch! I’ll figure out what provider I’ll go with soon and try it out!

As for the *arrs, yeah, but then I have to set up a nextcloud instance or jellyfin server too, and while I want to do all of the above I am made of neither money or time so it’s a slow rollout and I’d still like to make use of what I do have now, which is a 5tb external hdd and a 2013ish laptop with 8gb ddr3 and an i5, and a 1080p lcd from like 2009.

I think you’ve answered all the questions I have so far but I’ll lyk, thanks!

skankhunt42,
@skankhunt42@lemmy.ca avatar

For sure! Good luck! I’d suggest not paying for DS until you hit the free limit, then you can decide if you want to pay or wait a day for 25 more downloads. To be honest, I doubt you will hit the limit but I could be wrong.

I’m not sure where nextcloud comes in but I get your point. Cheers!

ArcaneSlime,

The free limit is 25 api hits, 5 downloads. It doesn’t say per day, but even still if that is the case, 5 is too low. If it is per day I only need the 15€ plan though at 1,000 API 100 DL instead of the 25€ plan. I’ll be waiting until friday to get that and (likely) eweka though in any case.

Nextcloud comes in for storage/offsite access, as I am a datahoarder, I plan to figure out if I can run nextclout, jellyfin, and a small matrix server off the same server, but I have to buy a small server first, or figure out a VPS. Lotta stuff, one step at a time.

skankhunt42,
@skankhunt42@lemmy.ca avatar

Aye, my bad. 5 Download 25API is listed in the “Daily Limits” column so you’re right.

You’re going down the same path I did awhile ago. It’s super fun when things work. Not so much when it doesn’t. If you want me to add to that list. Add Tailscale (and maybe Headscale ) to that list. I cant get over how cool it is. I’ve installed the app on my phone/Laptop and can access everything in my house while I’m away.

I have a couple raspberrypi4 and Lenovo M93p hosting all my stuff and I picked RackNerd from this list.

ArcaneSlime,

Thanks for all the advice, I’ve saved this comment for later! That does sound pretty cool!

ArcaneSlime,

Alright you’ve hooked me lol. So, Radarr huh? I’m not sure if that is the thing I want or not since there are so many *arrs and it is a bit confusing, is that the one that lets me do stuff like search “venture bros” on DS and click “download episodes” or something and it downloads them and organizes them by season?

Thanks again for all your help before and on this question!

skankhunt42,
@skankhunt42@lemmy.ca avatar

Radarr is Movies only. You’ll add your indexer username/password into it for it to search for movies you want. You’ll add sabnzbd for it to automatically download the movies. The download folder will need to be the same folder radarr has access to to move it to the complete folder.

The complete folder will be where Plex/jellyfin/whatever library is.

Sonarr is exactly the same thing but it is for TV shows.

I’m out until tomorrow evening. Once I get back home I can look at my setup and provide more specifics.

Basically you add everything into sonarr/radarr and it should do all the work for you. You just tell it what you want.

ArcaneSlime,

Awesome thanks, it sounds like I need Sonarr more than Radarr, I don’t mind manual searches for movies and then I can pick the one I want, but shows with 5 seasons and 13ep a season is a little much lol.

Don’t go through too much trouble on my acct looking at the set up, I think I may be able to set it up with the description you gave already and also the Sonarr docs, and for now since my set up is just download no stream I don’t have to worry about jellyfin or anything, I just want it to move everything labeled like “Superjail.S01E02.” Into folders by show name and season if Sonarr can do that.

Thanks again! I’ll check out Sonarr today/tomorrowish!

skankhunt42,
@skankhunt42@lemmy.ca avatar

Into folders by show name and season if Sonarr can do that.

Yep, that’s exactly what it does.

Sonar settings profiles - What version and quality of TV you’re looking for.

settings indexers - This is where you’ll put your DS account. Plus button, Newznab under “presets” you’ll see DS. Add your API key and test.

settings downloadclients - This is the URL/IP to sab, you’ll need to set it up and get an API key from it.

settings connect - This is where you can link Plex to tell it there’s a new ep.

Lets say you add Superjail to Sonarr in Series -> Add new. It’ll watch your indexer (DS) for that. as soon as the ep is on DS it’ll download the nzb and send it to sabnzbd. SAB will download it from your usenet provider.

In sab -> config -> folders the “Completed Download Folder” needs to be the exact same and accessible from sonarr. Mine is /downloads/complete/ this folder needs to be the same exact in SAB and Snoarr. The other thing in SAB is you need to put your usenet provider under sab.example.ca/config/server/. The other settings are useful, read them, set labels, etc.

Once SAB is done downloading it, it will be put into /downloads/complete/ and Sonarr will pick it up and move it to the Libary location Sonar has setup for Superjail

Good luck!

ArcaneSlime,

Awesome thanks for all the help! I’ll get this set up shortly! One final question, you say:

It’ll watch your indexer (DS) for that. as soon as the ep is on DS it’ll download the nzb…

Does this only watch new uploads, or would it also search through old uploads too? The show is already over and uploaded.

skankhunt42,
@skankhunt42@lemmy.ca avatar

After you add a show, You can hit the search icon within the show in sonarr and have it look for old EPs. It’ll do all of this automatically but you do have to click the search icon and tell it to go look for the old stuff.

After that initial add+search it’ll keep all your stuff updated. If a new ep comes out in the middle of the night it’ll grab it for you.

ArcaneSlime,

Perfect! Thanks again!

Whirlybird, (edited )

I’m happy to help if you do actually want to set anything up. Same goes for anyone else in here :)

I’ve got Sonarr/Radarr/Lidarr/NZBGet/Jackett/Overseer/Bazarr/Heimdall/Headphones/Transmission all running in docker containers, with tailscale giving easy and secure remote access, and have configured them many times on many setups, and I know how daunting/frustrating it can be.

    Waldemar_Firehammer,

I’m going to send you a message here in a little bit, I’d love to get this set up in a similar fashion.

    Whirlybird,

    :)

    miracleorange,

Literally never used Usenet, but I guess I’m about to start. Is this a good indexer?

    ExoMonk,

Its a great indexer. This and nzbgeek and I need pretty much nothing else

    Cqrd,

    What’s a good server?

    matey,

Do the limits expand over time, or is it always so limited for a free account?

    unbuckled,

Yeah, Usenet isn’t free. You’re gonna have to pay to get a decent indexer experience.

    foxfox,

    Excellent, thanks!

Anyone has any opinion on the site?
