Its not like you have to use their instances. What harm will it cause, if anything it'd benefit us.
It won't benefit us. Big Tech's goal ultimately is Embrace Extend Extinguish with...everything. That last E, "extinguish", can be substituted with "own" or "dominate".
Look at React. They created it. Now, look at VS Code. Made by Microsoft. VSC has telemetry built in.
These are now ubiquitous tools. They're so ubiquitous that knowing React is practically necessary if you want to do frontend. You may as well use VS Code while you're at it.
The implications of allowing them to have any influence or participation are huge.
Now tons of businesses rely on Meta's framework just to survive. They also dictate the terms - how it can be used, whether or not royalties are necessary, license compatibility, who you are allowed to compete against - the sky is the limit.
Meta met privately with stux (runs mstdn.social) and supposedly discussed starting a new federated platform. People are planning to defederate because this gives Meta free reign to inject ads through federation, and are angry that admins/mods are meeting privately with a for profit corporation make decisions within what is an open source community with open source software
I don't think you'll see many lemmmy instances on the list, since it's going to be viewed primarily as a microblogging issue.
But folks using Fediverse microblogging platforms can still read Lemmy posts and comments. Meta can still pull content for whatever it is they want to do, and a large number of poorly moderated users can still find Lemmy communities. So it should still be on people's minds.
