There’s a new shit storm around the lead dev of Firefish and Anti Blackness. Wibblur is built on top of it and we went with it because of the racism/anti blackness within mastodon development.
@eveiswurzig I think it's gonna keep being a problem until we see a black-led fork that centres black safety in the technology and uses their flagship community to teach and reinforce the social fixes that technology alone can't solve.
@jo Agreed, I would love to see more Black run and led instances and more empowering (and funding) of Black tech. Apart from anything else, I think it would serve the larger fediverse to have a vibrant, diverse community of servers rather than it being so dominated by White men (while I love how many transfemme developers there are in the fediverse, that in itself doesn't create diversity when White men still dominate much of tech and the culture of tech, and that's only likely to get worse as so many tech corporations contract).
Much like how any biggish instance should have a very diverse range of moderators because there's a very strong tendency for White and male people not to recognize racism and sexism (whether being perpetrated by themselves or others, ditto for ablism and all the bigotries). And unfortunately most White people who want to be in charge of everyone can't be trusted to be or apply antiracism because that would involve them giving up power to Black people instead of claiming it for themselves (White knighting is always self serving and exploitative and about maintaining power over). practi@eveiswurzig@strangeobject.space
