@esther reminds me of my cousin who used my digital slr to take pictures at my wedding. He had no idea what he was doing so he’d just hold the camera up and take as many shots as the buffer could hold then go to the next thing and repeat.

@Emily @emilygorcenski @ErikUden no that’s fair, my issue is that they added these exceptions so even after we change the gender marker is can be rendered meaningless because a space is gendered and decided to exclude us, it’s now fully enshrined in the self id law even though the problem doesn’t exist. There’s also a three month waiting period after applying just in case we change our minds.

Bluesky had a bad week as a company in relation to its community of users but a thing that is totally alive there rn and really not here is Black journalists and writers and internet people having non-101 conversations about rhetoric and networks at full speed without being hit with hundreds of identical replies about not seeing race or being asked to prove the existence of racism.

I hope fedi people who care about this stuff are paying attention and not just smugly writing them off.

@evan @kissane leadership from Wibblur here, how do you intend to distribute this aid and provide transparency around how the funds people provide are all going to the right people? While it’s great you’re doing this it does add another layer to getting support to the people and groups running these platforms who are doing the work.

Zuck is targeting & in one swoop. The 's requires no user lock-in and that messaging apps be able to interoperate with other messaging apps. By having adopt , fulfills those conditions (note: account migration to will be allowed).

The 's ticket to complying with the Act is via 's ATP protocol. But with Bluesky struggling to scale up and Twitter in chaos , they're both very vulnerable to Threads.

Does anybody on here know of an instance dedicated to Black queer folks? I'm not necessarily planning on moving but I am curious since apart from blacktwitter.io and wibblur I haven't even seen much that's even focused on Black communities. And if there isn't one/aren't many... Is that something people would be interested in? 👀 Do we have the population density on fedi to sustain such a thing? Cuz I might could maybe consider possibly starting one...

I’m seeing a couple side conversations about the wibblur announcement implying we’re pretending to be on the FediVerse or we’re doing what other instances are. There’s two things:

  • We are intentionally disconnected from the FediVerse. Everyone knows you can’t safely protect your users when federated and admins spend time banning instances but you have to rely on a hashtag to help. We’re taking the step to not deal with this and focus on building a community first.

  • others are definitely taking the same values seriously but we are being loud about it and making it the priority. Most importantly we’re building a platform for people and architecting the organization around these values. I want to find these individuals doing it to speak and learn what works and didn’t work. We’re not doing this in a bubble.

May be interested to hear that Aveta, the community organizer in black tech Twitter has launched a defederated Calckey instance that will be prioritize safety, privacy, and accessibility for minorities.

I’ve been working with her and others and while launched it is still invite only as we address T&S, accessibility issues and how to best grow the platform focused on users.
