I have to agree to waive my right to a jury trial in order to order a pizza.

What the heck?!

People, READ YOUR BLOODY AGREEMENTS. Please. They're binding legal documents. Literally all I do is search for the words "waive," "binding," and "arbitration." If I see those, I say no.

It's just not that hard.

Disclaimer: this toot is not to be interpreted as legal advice. Your mileage may vary. May be harmful or fatal if swallowed. Do not ingest. Do not dance with the devil in the pale moonlight.

Some minor clarification: (THIS IS STILL NOT LEGAL ADVICE. GO TALK TO AN ACTUAL LAWYER)

It is my (uneducated) understanding that are times where you'll see "waive" and "binding" in a way that isn't creepy, like saying that the company does not waive its rights if you refuse to abide by the terms, or just saying that the terms are binding in general.

"Arbitration" is a huge red flag, but there are other ways of saying it, so I also look for "waive" and "binding."

...

My understanding (this is an uneducated opinion and NOT LEGAL ADVICE) is that if you agree to arbitration, you have a tinkle in the wind's chance of winning, and if you do win, you won't win much.

If we lived in a country that wasn't fundamentally broken, these kind of agreements would be illegal. But we have to look out for one another, and that starts with not blithely agreeing to every shite TOS that you come across.

Please. Exercise that conscience. I know you've got a good one.

    A PiHole, perhaps? That's my interpretation of "private DNS", but it could be wrong.

    Nix does. ;)

    One interesting quality is there's no built-in tabbing. You can use an external tabber, but I figure I'd just use my tiling WM

    benjaminhollon,
    @benjaminhollon@fosstodon.org avatar

    @RL_Dane @sirber
    I believe that's actually nix that "has everything". 80,000 packages, kept up to date and seperated into channels so that one channel doesn't have feature or breaking changes.

    benjaminhollon,
    @benjaminhollon@fosstodon.org avatar

    @RL_Dane @sirber
    If you want the latest version of a specific package, you can do that.

    benjaminhollon,
    @benjaminhollon@fosstodon.org avatar

    @RL_Dane @sirber
    And lest sotolf jump in, I do admit I don't like everything about Nix, but I do like that.

    RL_Dane,
    @RL_Dane@fosstodon.org avatar

    @benjaminhollon @sirber

    There's an external tabber that works with some X11 applications (not many), but yeah, tabs in Sway (or i3wm) is pretty niiiice.

    @sirber

    That's neat. Do you have to run a client to ping them so DNS server knows it's you?

    The thing I like about cloudflare's DNS is that you don't have to register or run a client. It just does the same thing for everyone.

    You just set your router's dns to 1.1.1.1 and bob's your uncle.

    benjaminhollon,
    @benjaminhollon@fosstodon.org avatar

    @RL_Dane @sirber
    I like all of Cloudflare's products, I just don't like that they're forcibly re-centralizing the internet. And I don't like that I can hardly browse the web behind tor because I'm hit by CAPTCHAs on every cloudflare-proxied site I visit.

    So I moved all my sites off of Cloudflare.

    RL_Dane,
    @RL_Dane@fosstodon.org avatar

    @benjaminhollon @sirber

    This is a very fair criticism. 1.1.1.3 is the only service of theirs that I willingly use, and it is free to all without limitations, restrictions, or snoopy stuff (hopefully?)

    benjaminhollon,
    @benjaminhollon@fosstodon.org avatar

    @RL_Dane @sirber
    Yeah, it seems fine. The downside is it does incentivise visiting Cloudflare-proxied sites because they already have those cached and can serve them quicker.

    RL_Dane,
    @RL_Dane@fosstodon.org avatar

    @benjaminhollon @sirber

    Mmm, that's a fair concern.

    If there's a drop-in replacement that's also privacy respecting, I'd be interested to know about it.

    benjaminhollon,
    @benjaminhollon@fosstodon.org avatar

    @RL_Dane @sirber
    Well, I mentioned PiHole. ;)

    I'll look around, I guess. I know my parents pay for a VPN service (ExpressVPN, I think) but I can't vouch for it's privacy myself.

    RL_Dane,
    @RL_Dane@fosstodon.org avatar

    @benjaminhollon @sirber

    I do have mullvad, but I don't always use it. For one thing, I'm using Tracker Control on my new old phone and kindle to keep the spying services from getting out (hopefully). That uses up the one VPN slot in the system. It's basically a loopback vpn. That's how it captures and filters all of the connections. It doesn't provide an actual VPN service.

    benjaminhollon,
    @benjaminhollon@fosstodon.org avatar

    @RL_Dane @sirber
    I just use tor. I've got it always running in the background and can run :set content.proxy socks://localhost:9050 if I want to be behind it. Or prefix a command in the terminal with "torsocks".
