The US has a very unhealthy relationship with #CarDependency and nowhere is that felt more than here in #Detroit.

The #automotive industry has damaged Detroit severely.

The strife associated with the pending #UAW contract negotiations is indicative of this sickness.

Automotive manufacturing will never be a road to good-paying, middle-class jobs ever again.

We have to stop playing pretend.

It is an industry in structural decline and we should not be throwing good money at bad like we are.

Instead, we should have invested heavily in subsidizing domestic #manufacturing of advanced #rail technologies and trainsets.

Further, we should have heavily incentivized local governments to buildout #RegionalRail - something that many metro areas desperately need.

It is a deadlocked “chicken-or-the-egg” problem for many US metro areas and we needed massive funding to break the cycle.

Instead, #cars will be further entrenched via the #IRA’s flaws.

We will pay dearly for this in time.

@adamjcook I totally agree - you'd have thought the last guy might have done that if he really cared about bringing well paid working class jobs back to America to massively benefit his base. Instead he engaged in a tariff war against China which Americans paid for and we then had to subsidize farmers for loss of sales to China. I think I saw a number of $300B or more? That money could have been INVESTED in manufacturing.
