There are times when the Toronto Transit Commission’s Trip Planner feature works well.

And then there are times when its first result is suggesting you can walk 790 metres (half a mile) in 10 minutes. 🤔

apLundell,

@reay That works out to just barely under 3mph, which is a very commonly stated value for average walking speed. I wonder if that's what they're using. (If so, the cut-off in 10 minutes would be 805m.)

Of course, that assumes no crossings or traffic signals, but that's exactly the sort of assumption I'd expect an app maker to naively make.

@apLundell Realized the issue with the walking distance time estimate. I mis-typed the address. 3730, not 3070 as I had it.

I was wondering in retrospect why it was saying it was only 800-ish metres away, which is about 8 city blocks. It's 3.3 km (33-ish blocks) from my place.

Waaaay less confusing now.

There are times I feel extra not smart.

apLundell,

@reay Ha! That would explain it!

But, I still think that an app that assumes users can walk at exactly average walking speed is going to cause trouble for about half of its users.

@apLundell Oh, for sure. I’m a slow walker. But I should’ve twigged in earlier to the fact that I’m not THAT slow, and realized I made a manual error somewhere.

Like, yeah, I can walk 8 city blocks in about ten minutes. 🙄
