They should ask ChatGPT to make some ascii art, and tell us how that goes. It may not be a particularly useful example of human specialness, but it is a good example of the type of abstract thinking that does, in fact, make us special (so far).
@sapphichazard@misc I ended up deleting my reddit account after getting into yet another argument along this exact line. The sheer hubris/arrogance/disregard/insult-to-human-intelligence/ignorance of all this...
In the same thread someone argued that ChatGPT is SUPER CAPABLE but that it only lies when you put in bad input, to which I said "so when you know what the answer should be, you can tweak it to give a correct one? What if you don't know what the answer should be?"
I just hate that we're all falling, as a society, for that stupid cousin who skims wikipedia and then challenges experts in the field.
@astatide@misc I think that the number of people who fully understand human intelligence as a concept is so vanishingly small that it is unlikely that those same people are also involved in machine intelligence, sadly.
Heck I am not sure I fully do and I have spent years studying it. But it goes to your point: People who have no understanding of human intelligence are basically calling another system level with that intelligence and misunderstanding, gravely, both, and it's a poor indictment of what ever educational system produced those people, given how many of us it is obvious to.

But even by 'vibes', the whole thing fails. What's frustrating is this person was probably true in their claims to be a researcher doing brain-microchip interface work (albeit a junior researcher, which I HOPE is where their staggering arrogance and claims that chatbots are exactly like humans came from), which did not exactly inspire hope.
I think that anyone who wishes to claim something as intelligent as a living being must at least first show they respect the concept of biological intelligence. Nevermind that any perception of intelligence that the chatbot can give comes as a result of the massive quantities of intellectual human output that have gone into it. I don't get to claim I'm a greater writer for copy/pasting Shakespeare.

Spot on. Our culture is somewhat plagued by a need to place things on a ladder, or to make them linear. Intelligence simply does not work that way, but people love taking situational things and applying them ridiculously broadly for some reason.
Intelligence, like so many other things, is a spectrum, if not a malapropism designed to give one of the most complex concepts in existence an understandable face.
@sapphichazard@astatide This has been my understanding as well, but I confess that a part of me internalized the message that it was motivated thinking, and I was potentially hiding from "hard truths". It took all this AI bullshit to infuse my beliefs with real conviction. We're right, and they're the sloppy thinkers, god damnit.
