"Food delivery robots under attack from vandals, thieves"

Least surprising news story ever

@virtualbri As did many others, I publicly predicted years ago that this would happen, along with people blocking robotaxis.

@lauren And shooting delivery drones out of the air. As long as even 1% of people are incorrigible assholes (and we refuse to let robots defend themselves), this impasse is going to happen.

lauren,
@lauren@mastodon.laurenweinstein.org avatar

@cra1g I'm in favor of refusing to permit robots to defend themselves.

cra1g,
@cra1g@sciences.social avatar

@lauren I assume you mean active defenses. That I'm fairly certain we're not close to feeling are reasonable. But passive defenses (e.g., protective shells, bulletproof camera lenses, etc.) should be allowed, yes?

lauren,

@cra1g Protected? Yes. Fighting back? No.

@cra1g@sciences.social avatar

@lauren My goal isn't pedantry, but I do feel this topic deserves more nuanced discussion.

I think most reasonable people would agree on a few positions:

  • putting a gun on a delivery bot is completely nuts
  • armoring a delivery bot to protect its cargo is totally OK
  • there's a gray area where "protection/prevention" mechanisms can overlap with "fighting back"
  • if someone is trying to hijack or destroy a delivery bot, they're breaking the law
  • Keeping them "soft targets" undermines their use

@cra1g And what is your suggestion that wouldn't quickly result in the associated firms being sucked into litigation that would likely put them out of business?

cra1g,
@cra1g@sciences.social avatar

@lauren No idea. IANAL. But we do allow companies to use things that can harm people as a deterrent, such as barbed wire and razor wire fences. So it's not totally obvious where the line can be and should be drawn here.

I'm not looking for agreement, just clarity. We've already decided as a society that sometimes property rights supersede a human's right to safety, and I'm rather curious how that translates to our relationship with robots.

lauren,
@lauren@mastodon.laurenweinstein.org avatar

@cra1g There a big difference between protecting one's own fixed property space vs. a device you send out on public streets that interacts with people. Any attempt to push back by those devices would likely be bad news for the associated firms. Think about cars. They get frequently vandalized, but they're not permitted to take aggressive action other than sound an alarm.

cra1g,
@cra1g@sciences.social avatar

@lauren It's an OK analogy. I have to admit that, unlike with a static piece of property left somewhere, I feel like a robot actively doing a job seems more deserving of added protection. Nothing harmful, of course, but would it be so bad if that little bot could've released a cloud of fart spray or UV dye at its attacker?

In general, I feel like any time we break the Fuck Around --> Find Out connection, we embolden thieves and vandals and others who undermine society. And that's frustrating.

@virtualbri Just install pop-up turrets that fire french fries into the mouths of hungry vandals. The carbs will render them sleepy and lethargic. Then the salt and fat will attack their cardiovascular system as they rest. Perfect defense.

I have no idea why iRobot hung up on me during my pitch.

@virtualbri Context is important. Crap neighborhoods are gonna be subject to more vandalism.

To the person screaming "zomg robots are taking jobs!!!", they're not robots: They're remote controlled electric devices piloted by employees.
✅ Minimal carbon emissions
✅ Reduces street congestion
✅ Provides low cost small batch deliveries
✅ Efficient & fast for short distance jobs
✅ Still keeps people employed
...I hate however when they attempt to do 2mi deliveries & it turns up COLD or LATE. 😡

    @virtualbri @CStamp On one hand, it's just a corollary to the ever obnoxious mantra, "If it bleeds, it leads".

    OTOH, there's no metric for reputation & when journalism is pressured to attract viewers vs YouTube, TikTok & the current wild west of information sources who are largely alarmist hype machines, you can see how this might be their approach.

    Car chases... weather disasters... shootings & assorted fearmongering is the flavor of the day.
