I spent time painting tonight and decided to start some "remix" pieces for my Tower of Terror. (A "remix" in this context is an STL that's been modified to include new or different features.)

Even with just the rough colors blocked out, I can tell this catacomb level will look great!

This is without washes, but with a rust effect on his armor. Next stop: Soft Tone for the bones and Dark Tone for everything else. Then Matte Varnish.

Sadly, "Will it get cancelled before there is a satisfying conclusion?" has been a regular part of TV ever since there were shows that were going in any direction.

And the odds have never been good.

artair,
@artair@ohbear.wtf avatar

@virtualbri I feel this pain about Infinity Train. Cartoon Network couldn't cope with a show that's about psychology and Buddhism with heavy real-world topics, like coping with trauma and unfairness in the world.

CN felt it was too "adult" for kids, but honestly I feel like today's kids needed those messages more than ever.

I really wish they'd give the show a chance to wrap up with a movie or something.

Yo, Zaslav! Release the damn film already! You really don't want to see what do when they get mad.

Ask Kellogg's. They threw down the gauntlet over art involving Tony, and our artists did a GRR-EAT! job of frosting his flakes until the suits retreated.

We want to give you money. We grew up with and love this coyote. But you? You we can take or leave.

Release the damn film, or the coyote gets an OnlyFans.

Well, this gives me mixed emotions, as Lower Decks is my favorite Star Trek show out there, if I'm pressed.

artair,
@artair@ohbear.wtf avatar

@virtualbri I don't suppose there's any chance Netflix might take up Lower Decks as a companion to Prodigy, is there? One show for kiddos, one show for overgrown kiddos?

I'm glad Strange New Worlds made the cut. It's the best Star Trek show in many years. I like Discovery and Picard, but SNW is insanely good and has such beautiful character development.

artair, to StarTrek
@artair@ohbear.wtf avatar

So Rayner on Discovery is a Kellerun, I guess? Deep cut from . I think this has always been my major complaint about characters on Discovery: please focus on the individuals a bit more and let us learn about them one-on-one.

For the first season of Discovery, the names of the people working the bridge were (in my head) Stuff-Glued-to-Her-Face, Person-to-the-right-of-Stuff-Glued-to-Her-Face, and Robot Woman. Owo's semi-solo episode in season two was INCREDIBLY welcome.

artair,
@artair@ohbear.wtf avatar

There are people on the Discovery bridge who are more-or-less just filler-faces to this day. What's the deal with Big-Headed-Maybe-Spider-Guy, for example? They've been standing at their post like a good soldier for years with no explanation beyond “they’re bridge crew." How much has Rhys really been allowed to develop? How much character depth has Lt. Nilsson accumulated?

These are people. Don't use them only for set dressing. I WANT to know about their fictional lives.

It's wild that companies now regularly publicly announce they're going to increase prices because they can.

Just for more profit.

    @virtualbri My guess is that no matter how they cut it together, it didn't meet expectations. Netflix has had some awful sci-fi flops lately, and the suits may just be saving some pennies after the fact rather than spend any more finishing, promoting, and streaming this thing.

    The fact that I can't even find one trailer for it seems ominous right off the bat.

    artair,
    @artair@ohbear.wtf avatar

    @virtualbri Given today's news about them pulling the rug out from under their "basic" streaming tier, I would assume that something is ¢a$h. People are fuming right now, and I imagine this isn't the end of them crushing two pennies together to make a dime.

    I had absolutely no idea that Tom Baker and Lalla Ward did advertisements for Prime Computer in the #1980s! Also, I have never, ever heard of Prime Computer. What's even more astounding is that they were based in my home state of Massachusetts! Why have I never heard of them?

    It makes sense that Doctor Who would be a "hot property" in Massachusetts at that time. #WGBH in #Boston aired the Baker years frequently.

    @virtualbri Honestly, when I saw it and the dazzling array of art styles, cuts, clever animation tricks, etc. that it used, I felt like someone deserved an award for something. The level of complexity involved was staggering.

    If they don't deserve a award, they should at least be nominated for something art related. You could see all the love, effort, and time put into every frame of that movie.

    artair,
    @artair@ohbear.wtf avatar

    @virtualbri That'd work! I think the conflict comes from the fact that so many animated films are now computer-generated. A line seems to be blurring, and everyone’s still figuring out what that means.

    I can see the case for putting Spider-Verse into the "animation" bucket, and I don't want to see other people's work diluted or disregarded in any way. But I can honestly say even the previous film didn't reach the super high standards for the sequel.

    @lauren @virtualbri Speaking as someone who's worked in the tech industry (including The Valley) for some time, you're a bit off. Hatred requires seeing a person to hate. Tech sees people as datasets with legal hurdles.

    I worked four floors above Google in Cambridge, MA for five years. I heard various forms of "we can't violate privacy if the data is anonymized and handled by machines" from their people in the elevator.

    They don't hate you. They hate your resistance to their business model.

    I worked briefly for a game studio run by The Rabbit in the Water Tower, and I can tell you right now that you should be very, VERY concerned about your favorite franchises. And if you doubt that, review all the horseshit Zaslav has done lately.

    WB Games is unafraid to take the lowest of low roads. I was witness to the Infinite Crisis debacle. It took years to develop and launch, and a scant couple of months before cancellation.

    Dear Hollywood:

    Your stupid studios and their stupid insistence on being stupid are holding up this strike. I'm getting e-mail updates from saying they're having trouble fundraising for season fourteen due to their cast being unable to promote stuff.

    If you hinder my ability to watch robot puppets make fun of your industry's excrement, I swear that I will find a way to launch all of YOU into space and make you watch bad movies.

    Sincerely,

    artair,
    @artair@ohbear.wtf avatar

    @virtualbri Yeah, and I'll be blunt: The Gizmoplex wasn't their best play. A large part of why the studios are in trouble is because they became tech companies by proxy with streaming services. Mike’s crew went the “on demand, DRM-free" route, and they've been going strong for MANY years.

    If I could cast Dominate Person on Joel for a day, I'd have him negotiate a place for new MST3K on RiffTrax.com and bail on the streaming infrastructure. Those Gizmoplex Passes come with serious sticker shock.

    I realized today that I'm still wrapping my mind around the Fediverse. For example, if I want a Lemmy account, do I have to have a separate instance from my Mastodon account or can they be the same (and if so, how?)

    Any help is appreciated.

    artair,
    @artair@ohbear.wtf avatar

    @montecook The easiest way to think of it is like this: ActivityPub is made up of information that various applications PRESENT differently. A Friendica (Facebook) account might have posts, pictures, and events. But if someone on Mastodon follows a Friendica account, Mastodon might not know how to interpret events since it doesn't have those. Events might turn into oddly-formatted toots (the nearest equivalent).

    Lemmy is basically Reddit threaded discussions. Those don't translate well here.
