Re-reading some game design books to figure out a way through my ongoing project reboot. I haven’t gotten along with most theory books, but these 3 continue to be invaluable. I highly recommend them to anyone interested in giving this silly trade a go.

Advanced Game Design, by Mike Sellers

Theory of Fun, by Raph Koster

Here’s some kind of summary of what I think each is primarily about.

Advanced Game Design: what the atomic parts of a game are, and how to put them together into a game design. Not easy or obvious.

Theory of Fun: why people might or might not play your game. Spoiler: it’s about learning!

Game Feel: why the act of playing your game might or might not feel good. Helped me connect a lot of dots as an interaction designer.
