A (visually) more obvious "this thing is a video/animated gif" indicator.
A small plain white circle with a hole might work with a dark background, but is almost invisible with white or any other lighter color/pattern.
Picture one is a video, picture two an animated gif...

I keep losing my spot in timelines when the app is exited and especially when i switch accounts. Perhaps we can find a way to fix this bug. Love everything else!

I'm not sure if it falls into UI for messages improvements, but I'd love to see support for categories when selecting instance emoji. :blobcatmeltthumbsup:

a more consistent UI, I feel like the icons are too dissimilar and it always feels like they're spaced irregularly. fwiw I quite like the megalodon layout.
@neutronwrangler@apps Exactly! There were actually a couple of Twitter apps that had this feature. I used Plume for years and got used to reading in the natural direction.
The reverse order we have now is especially irritating when reading replies, replies to replies and threads.
Btw, the thread view in #fedilab should be done over, it is not functional.

The indentation is a nice idea, but it doesn't really work, at least not for me. The thin lines in the left margin are just confusing, so I've turned off indentation altogether. If you use lines, they should not be so thin, and maybe not in the margin. It's not possible to distinguish the different colors of you don't have perfect eyesight. Maybe take a look at how some other apps handle threads, there are good and bad examples. @neutronwrangler #fedilab

Not exactly about messages, but...
A switch button to quickly show and hide already seen messages might be helpful. And place it on an easy access place like the main bottom bar.

Wow, surprised to see so many suggestions for the improvement of the already wonderful app I started using just a couple of months back. Keep up the good work team. 👍

@apps
In der Tableiste die Möglichkeit sich die Lesezeichen anzeigen zu lassen. Ich finde meine nicht. Würde zu gerne diesen Trööt als Lesezeichen setzen und bei neuen Antworten wieder reinsehen zu können. Push-Up wäre dann toll.

Not sure if it matches what you're asking for, but anyway:
A way to stop messages from jumping around all the time. I sometimes completely lose my way and can't tell what I've already read and what's new. The reading position jumps up and down many messages at a time, probably when new boosts are encountered during message fetch so that older messages move up in the timeline.
Personally I'd prefer boosts to not affect the order of messages at all unless they are very old.
@blue_led@apps This was an issue in earlier versions but I have not seen it lately. The app seems to remember my position very well and the timeline hardly moves at all when automatically fetching new messages. This is maybe the single best feature of #fedilab 🙂
@kallekn@apps
I have Fedilab 3.24.1 installed via F-Droid. From what I can tell this is the latest release. I've had the jumping around happen today again.
FWIW the server seems to be running Mastodon 4.1.6.
@apps@Oaktag@kallekn
Still getting jumps after disabling "fit preview images".
My impression still is that it's related to boosting. Just now I saw one message stay "in place" and lots of others appearing below it that I haven't read before. The one that kept "in place" was boosted by someone though I cannot tell whether it had already been boosted by that account when the previous fetch happened.
Sometimes this happens multiple times in quick succession (batching?) and I'm completely lost.

When typing a tag in a toot, display tag trends in the autocomplete list that shows up (like in tag search results) in order to help finding mort comonly used tags.
@apps Combine the counters and the reaction buttons under each post. Remove the ugly "Hide content" button or make it more discrete. In the compose window, the bottom row of buttons shouldn't be hidden by the keyboard. The top navigation bar and the compose button are visible all the time when reading bottom to top but disappear when reading top to bottom, which is not ideal. The "fetching more" text in the timeline is too big and ugly.
Please add Finnish to list of languages to be translated.
@apps I don't know if this exists, but maybe a warning when you tag a new person for a conversation. Basically warn you so you don't accidentally bring someone into a DM by tagging them.
@apps
This is just personal preference, but I've found the floating posting button superimposed over the timeline which appears and disappears when scrolling to be somewhat distracting and sometimes obscures reading. I would prefer it to be static and pinned out of the way, perhaps on the right side of the toolbar.
