@MattHodges I want to say "no one is saying this" but I'm not quite sure what you think people are saying. If it's "this will fizzle on its own" then no, I don't see that being a common view.
What’s even funnier is that I’ve seen the same people both simultaneously deride it as “just” a stochastic parrot-like toy and also offer up scary tales of a dystopian future wherein AI renders everybody unemployed and miserable.
I can understand one perspective or the other, but seeing it come from the same people is a real kick.
My take: It’s motivated reasoning. They WANT it to be worthless because they fear it.
@MattHodges@misc My sense is that it’s a bit overhyped in the short term but nevertheless there is transformative potential over the longer term and one would be wise to not stick one’s head in the sand and ignore it.
And, for what it’s worth, I wasn’t a big blockchain / NFT / web3 booster.
@jeff@MattHodges Trouble is, without examples of what you're responding to, I can't tell if you're responding to something like my position, stripped of nuance & made to sound absurd. That position being: I think what we're calling "AI" is not intelligence (or on a path to it) & is unfit for most purposes being proposed. I also think it's powerful, already proven harmful, poised to be far more so, & won't just go away. (And yes I'm scared, & not immune from motivated reasoning.)
@misc@MattHodges I’m not saying there aren’t nuanced critiques of ways the technology is being used/misused (some of which I might agree with), and it’s very well possible that yours are perfectly internally consistent.
The subset of critiques I’m referring to mainly read as mostly being protectionist, suggesting that vast swathes of the population will be permanently put out of work by AI that is also, simultaneously, woefully incapable of doing that work.
