I love having the privilege of being able to work from home most days. However, this week we have a big in-person meeting in our office that I have to attend. I'm excited about the meeting itself, but it also means I have to commute in every day. It's only 7 miles away, but it's a 45 minute drive by car, an hour by Metro, or an hour and a half by bike. Maybe I'll do all three throughout the week!

How should I go in?

    @James Follow up question: what time do you have to get up?

    James,
    @James@woof.group avatar

    @copperreddc yep, in DC so WMATA is sometimes a crapshoot. But accounting for some fuckery on 295/395/Rhode Island Ave/anywhere-in-DC-during-afternoon-rush-hour is much more of a given than WMATA delays. Plus with WMATA, I can just chill out and listen to some podcasts!

    James,

    @copperreddc also I get up around 530/6 in the morning on days I come into the office. Gets me into the office early enough so I can get to the gym nearby for a workout and a steam. 💨💨

    @James 45 minutes for 7 miles sounds pretty rough 😩

    James,
    @James@woof.group avatar

    @wetotterpup 7 miles as a straight line, 23 miles by roads, crossing two "state" lines. Maryland -> DC -> Virginia. Driving is okay in the morning, but ALWAYS a mess in the afternoon and it can almost double the trip time.

    @James yeah it used to be I could drive to work for 45 mins or take metro…for an hour best case or 1:45 if I missed the express shuttle to work from the station :/

    notthatready,

    @James I voted bike but 90 minutes to go 7 miles leads me to believe there may be looooots of uphill on your route

    James,
    @James@woof.group avatar

    @notthatready well, 7 miles as the crow flies, but the bike route would be just about 15 miles each way. It's mostly flat until I get to Arlington/Roslyn at which point it's basically a constant uphill 🙃

    notthatready,

    @James ah, 15 miles will do that! And the hills west of the Potomac are no joke! My husband and I biked out to Courthouse on the Custis trail and some of them are steep, some are long, and some are both.

    I'd still keep my answer as bike if it's just a few times this week 😊

    James,
    @James@woof.group avatar

    @notthatready best part about the custis trail being all uphill to Ballston is that the ride home is all downhill 🚲💨

    notthatready,

    @James Which means the least effort/most fun option is: metro in, bike home 😈

    James,
    @James@woof.group avatar

    @notthatready you know... I have done that once or twice! At least it's the reverse commute, but still transferring at L'Enfant with a bike is messy

    notthatready,

    @James Woof, yeah, during rush hour too. Yet one more option: bike part way to the metro, take the metro out to work, and then bike home. I don't know where in the DMV you are, so that also may be unworkable--or maybe it turns out it's just the right mix of tradeoffs 😌

    James,
    @James@woof.group avatar

    @notthatready not too far away from the Hyattsville Crossing station (formerly PG Plaza). It's doable

    notthatready,

    @James Oh, I was thinking biking to, like, Stadium-Armory and then metroing from there. Definitely a longer bike ride on the front leg (and potentially longer trip overall), but you do miss that L'Enfant transfer, then.

    (Sligo creek trail and ART are neat, too! Just wish the SCT didn't have so many at-grade crossings with six-lane roads.)

    Just kicking around ideas--none of them may make any particular sense, but sometimes you stumble into something Good

    @notthatready I had never biked to Stadium-Armory but that was a good call! Nice longish ride along the Anacostia River Trail, which runs not too far away from my house. Even got to see the sunrise along my ride!

    notthatready,

    @James 😍😁 Glad you got to try a new route--the ART and Northeast Branch Trail are both nice rides, too! Hopefully the metro into the office was easy enough
