V brakes are a bit annoying, found some Magura HS33 on sale for over 50% off, it's pretty tempting to upgrade the folding bike.

But that's still 88€ for two brakes and perhaps some brake booster(s) for extra rigidity (10-24€ for 1-2).

So I paid 500€ for the bike used and would spend 100€ on brake upgrades...

The v brakes just lose their center somewhat and start rubbing. Also there's friction in the brake cable and that's somewhat annoying when you're used to hydraulic discs everywhere else

@juliank, that’s why I prefer caliper brakes. I find them easier to adjust myself. In fact, I actually understand how to adjust them, whereas I have no idea how the hell V-brakes work.

@andrew_shadura Well if you only have the classic two cantilever bosses on the frame, normal caliper brakes with their single top center bolt mounting point don't really seem an option unless you find someone to CNC you some adapter.

But the Magura just uses the two bosses like cantilevers and V-brakes and hydraulic is a plus IMO because you don't suddenly get friction when it gets colder or whatever.

agrantler,

@juliank @andrew_shadura Shimano V-Brakes with Shimano brake pads work quite well. Personally, i'm not a fan of hydraulic brakes due to maintenance reasons. Magura of course is usually a good choice.

@juliank, you do have that bolt, don't you? What sort of an adapter do you need?

juliank,
@juliank@mastodon.social avatar

@andrew_shadura the v-brake is attached to cantilever mounts as customary, and there is a mounting point for a mudguard.

I don't if you could fit a mechanical caliper brake on the mudguards mounting point but also those are all race brakes for 25mm tyres at most anyhow, whereas the folding bike has 50mm tyres.

Anyhow, I did order the half price Magura HS33, they seem to be considered the gold standard for rim brakes in Germany and almost unheard of outside of Germany and neighbours.

@andrew_shadura my friend ordered five of the HS33 for backup :D

juliank,
@juliank@mastodon.social avatar

@andrew_shadura AND we ordered the soft red pads because soft pads brake better, and well they'll be nicer to the rim. They are their competition model.

I'm totally over engineering the braking capabilities of the folding bike but better too much braking than too little 😇

@juliank, the mudguard mounting point is the same thing as the caliper brake mounting point, which is exactly the point 🙂
Also, a lot of caliper brakes can fit on 50 mm tyres. For example, Alhonga (this one is a rear brake, but it’s almost identical to the front one):

@andrew_shadura interesting. The categories here for rim brakes are MTB brakes, road bike brakes, BMX brakes; caliper brakes are only in the road bike brake section, like that's synonymous

@andrew_shadura@mastodon.social avatar

@juliank, I think most of the Czechoslovak-made city bicycles (Favorit, Eska, Liberta) had caliper brakes or coaster brakes or both in some combination.

@juliank@mastodon.social avatar

@andrew_shadura fascinating, I've never seen a caliper brake outside of road bikes here I think, not that I paid much attention. Well OK I guess technically the Magura are caliper brakes too, just hydraulic and with cantilever mounts.

I've seen cantilever brakes and V-brakes, but also 90% or so are disc brake equipped e-bikes now.

Data gathered while eating falafel at bike path entry point on Friday

andrew_shadura,
@andrew_shadura@mastodon.social avatar

@juliank, yeah, most sports bicycles here also come with disc brakes. Modern city bicycles often come with V-brakes or drum brakes. Calipers are quite out of fashion.

juliank,
@juliank@mastodon.social avatar

@andrew_shadura I don't even think we have a word for them, I only know them as Rennradbremse (road bike brake)

andrew_shadura,
@andrew_shadura@mastodon.social avatar

@juliank, interesting; the Dutch call them knijprem, apparently.

@juliank@mastodon.social avatar

The v brakes have two finger levers, the HS33 have 4 finger levers. And red brake pads are what I would use.

I don't really do any maintenance, I pay mechanics to take care of these things.
