let's never forget this is how the great Iwata handled the poor reception of Wii U, not with layoffs, but by cutting his own wage.

I highly recommend reading Ask Iwata book to know more about Satoru Iwata

"I sincerely doubt employees who fear that they may be laid off will be able to develop software titles that would impress people“

@djlink I got this as a gift for my birthday and have brought it into work today to start!

@djlink ha, it was a few weeks ago, but thank you nonetheless 😁

@djlink all a US CEO gets from this is "if you hear your employees express fears of being laid off, fire them immediately, as they will not make impressive software anymore"

@djlink The only brave exec.

@djlink Nintendo invest time and energy in their staff. So firing them makes less sense? Compare that to most US/Euro companies... hmm 🤔 I suspect somewhere in a Japanese mangement manual there is a chapter on how you don't need to be a dick.

@djlink Imagine if Mozilla would do this

@djlink this is a Japanese custom: CEOs take pay cuts when their firms miss fiscal targets.

seiKay,

@djlink to be fair, I don't know how layoffs would make sense either because those employees were put to work on the switch.

Were they gonna fire and then rehire?

@djlink By all accounts I've heard, Satoru Iwata was a darn decent dude, but don't forget cultural / legal systemic effects. It is way harder to fire people in Japan compared to the US.

djlink,
@djlink@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@nobunagaota that’s true yeah. But overall seems like he was indeed a good boss. You read the book Ask Iwata?

nobunagaota,
@nobunagaota@peoplemaking.games avatar

@djlink But of course!

aenea,
@aenea@paquita.masto.host avatar

@djlink he also lowered the salary of employees, but less than his. And Nintendo has raised salaries above inflation this year. This is how you treat employees!

@djlink@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@aenea I saw that news, they want to keep morale up, they have the money for it, good for them, that will bring loyalty and people will wanna do good for them and the company, it's simple.
