How to scan a multipage document.

Find the sheetfed-multifunction printer thing that has been sitting around unused for years. Turn it on, connect up and then realize modern Mac versions don't support this thing (why? who the hell knows). Google around, find out that 10.15 is the last OS that supports this. Boot up my 2013 MacPro, boot up a 10.15 VM, snapshot, install drivers, scan, revert snapshot.

A super simple 20 step process!

FossilzedCarlos,

@paul I keep a Catalina VM around solely to manage my ScanSnap 510M 🤣

_Torben_,

@paul Lucky you! I brought a scanner years ago which was sold in a Hardware config for Mac and one for Windows. Guess which one so had!

@paul scanners are just a cyber attack vector for trees

bitmover,

@paul Hp laserjet with sheetfed scanner works in image capture just fine.

francehopper,

@paul sounds like my adventures in getting duplex printing to work for my Pixma MP560. Apple just eventually released a generic driver for it.

soperman,

@paul is there a reason you’re not using the iPhone’s built-in scanning functionality in the files app?

jimdab,

@paul
I recently discovered the Notes app on my phone can be used with the camera to take pictures of a document and convert to a multipage PDF. Worked surprisingly well.

@paul

I'm having great, just fantastic success with document scanning in Dropbox on ipads or iphones. Only in the case of 50+ page docs would I consider a sheet-fed scanner.

A few folks have mentioned VueScan which is a much simpler process. 5 years from now when I next have to scan more than 10 pages I’ll take a look. Though realistically I’ll probably forget it exists by then and do the same thing I did today.

@paul Yes VueScan has drivers for many scanners & associated hardware. But it may or may not work as well as the native software & drivers, have to try it to see.

@paul what’s paper?

sircoolio,

@paul Genius Scan (iOS). Point. shoot. repeat. Software takes care of the rest. magical. I don't have to bring out my Canon document scanner until the job is >15-20 pages.

@paul I found ExactScan (http://www.exactscan.com) to be a much nicer alternative to VueScan. Needed it once Fujitsu finally gave up on the S1500M.

ceb,

@paul I use VueScan all the time. It’s really great and an excellent list of scanners it supports.

I use it with my Epson Perfection V600 and a few other scanners I have at home. Works like a charm!

@paul Had to scan some papers not that long ago. Ended up using KDE’s scanner app (whatever it’s called, or at least it seemed included in the software I could install) and it just, worked. Out of the box, zero setup. I was amused.

@paul It’s pricey, but I was just about to suggest that software to you. It revived my 15+ year old Microtek ScanMaker 9800XL.

cpragman,

@paul VueScan FTW!
No more dealing with mfg drivers that are many years old and not updated for the latest OS.

@paul As someone else said; just use VueScan. I’ve had a license for…gods, it has to be decades at this point, and as long as my network is stable (not a problem if your scanner is physically connected) it works perfectly. I also have a Really Good printer/scanner/copier for my home office. (Canon MF634Cdw)

@paul Image Capture on MacOS is pretty convenient… https://support.apple.com/guide/image-capture/transfer-images-imgcp1003/mac —OR— Right click on desktop → Import from iPhone → Scan document.

@paul not sure I understand the issue, but I’m using a printer/scanner and I can use the document feeder for multi-page scanning, including both sided scans. Doesn’t seem to matter whether I use macOS, iPadOS or iOS. I end up with a multi-page file saved to iCloud.

@paul Hardware on the Mac…

My old fancy mouse is no longer supported by Logitech and none of the new fancy (non-Logitech) mice I’m eyeing have Mac support.

reuvenim,

@paul I bought VueScan…

davemacdo,

@paul It's getting to the point where unless your document is more than 30 pages, it's faster to use a phone app.

paul,
@paul@tapbots.social avatar

@davemacdo it was about 15 pages, way more than I'd want to scan with a phone.

davemacdo,

@paul honestly, with auto-snapping and edge-finding, I'd happily do 15 pages with Scanner Pro (and in fact, I do regularly).
