I just want a document app with a gallery view that I can drag-and-drop to rearrange in manual order.

It’s wild that I’m pretty sure Airtable’s Gallery view is the only app that allows this on mobile. Craft cards are a close second.

andrewconn,
@andrewconn@mastodon.social avatar

@matthewcassinelli You can’t do this with Notion, Asana, Trello, iA Witer, Bear, Obsidian, etc…?

@matthewcassinelli Oh! Gallery view. I see what you’re saying.

A public service announcement with an expiration date: if you've loved my writing and science, I have a book proposal+sample chapter out on submission right now. The pitch is "The Psychology of Software Teams": a general audience, warmly human, accessible book for teams, leaders, and curious minds, filled to the brim with practitioner stories AND the new empirical social science of technology innovation. 🙌❤️

Let me know if you know editors who might be interested in this uniquely cool project.

First, it’s great that @MichaelWhelan is on Mastodon. What an amazing artist.

Second, his recent post featured a spherical alien that I instantly recognized from my childhood. https://mastodon.art/@MichaelWhelan/112428886103083708

It’s from this book, published in 1980, which had a cover image that is also burned into my brain.

@stefan I think maybe you’d want to have an option for this to be anonymous. Maybe that’s on by default. On the other side, for the person being unfollowed, I could see showing a bar/pie chart to them so they could see the feedback in aggregate. 2 cents.

On iOS 17, how do I load an existing ringtone onto the phone? The online directions I’ve found use iTunes, which is not on current macOS, or recording a sound on the phone. I already have the sound on my computer. I can load the ringtone as a file, but it doesn’t show for phone or text tones.

EDIT: Added solution in reply.

andrewconn,
@andrewconn@mastodon.social avatar

@gdinwiddie Make sure it’s the correct length. Text tones have a hard limit. And, if I remember correctly, different file extensions too.

Bloggers and writers! Which tool(s) are you using to draft and write your posts or articles? And how do you keep track of the status of a piece (idea/draft/edited/published etc.)?

andrewconn,
@andrewconn@mastodon.social avatar

@matthiasott @davatron5000 You could make a Kanban view in IA Writer with a custom template using CSS grid. Pull in multiple content blocks to each column based on hashtag (idea, outline, draft, etc) that you include in the metadata of your source file. No drag / drop, but would give a nice overview of content and states. Out of the box Kanban view by IA Writer would be way better though because you’d get the view at the global app level vs the document / template level. cc: @ia

If you've ever posted anything on Reddit, your words are going to be sucked up into an "AI" database. The people who profit from this are Reddit and the "AI" company.

What do you get? Screwed, again, by tech companies that have pure contempt for your privacy and rights.

I want a Shared Up Next for the Apple TV app.

There’s certain shows I save to watch with my partner, and other shows I watch on my own – being able to separate the two would be great 📺

andrewconn,
@andrewconn@mastodon.social avatar

@matthewcassinelli Totally agree. Apple TV UX made an assumption that account switching should be at the global level — like when you log in to a computer. But, using a TV is a shared experience, not a desk with a computer one person can use at a time. The way it’s designed adds a LOT of friction and (in observing my family’s use) leads to simply having one main account nobody ever switches from. (1/3)

andrewconn,
@andrewconn@mastodon.social avatar

@matthewcassinelli This UX decision degrades your experience over time — especially with Apple’s own services — because the data used to power content recommendations for a single account is now coming from multiple people and their preferences. So, nobody is getting what they want recommended, having to look longer, etc. It’s a viscous self-reinforcing cycle. (2/3)

andrewconn,
@andrewconn@mastodon.social avatar

@matthewcassinelli What I think we’d all like to see is fast user switching PER APP just like we see with basically every streaming app these days. It’s a well established UX pattern at this point and I can only assume they haven’t implemented it due to some underlying platform / technical baggage. (3/3)

Just discovered the Dropbox had turned on -- without my assent -- a feature that let it use what I've stored there for AI training, which means it was being sent to "Open"AI. I had to opt out, and only did it after being alerted here on Mastodon to the fact that this was happening. (h/t @natematias)

This is a disgusting betrayal, and I'm looking for an alternative to Dropbox.

(Update: This story from CNBC says Dropbox CEO claims the sharing "only" occurs if you use the AI tools in the site.)

How to scan a multipage document.

Find the sheetfed-multifunction printer thing that has been sitting around unused for years. Turn it on, connect up and then realize modern Mac versions don't support this thing (why? who the hell knows). Google around, find out that 10.15 is the last OS that supports this. Boot up my 2013 MacPro, boot up a 10.15 VM, snapshot, install drivers, scan, revert snapshot.

A super simple 20 step process!

Safari 17.0 for Mac is here!
https://webkit.org/blog/14445/webkit-features-in-safari-17-0/

Have you updated yet? You can, even if you are not ready for macOS Sonoma.

If you are running macOS Ventura or macOS Monterey, you can update Safari by going to Software Update and clicking “More info”. On macOS Ventura, that’s  > System Settings > General > Software Update > More info, and choose to update Safari.

There are massive updates to our developer tools, plus Web Apps on macOS Sonoma!
