I spent my first year on Mastodon following people like mad, now it feels like it's time to prune the ol' follow list.

Anyone have suggestions about the best way to do this? Best apps? Services?

@mimsical If you’re in the Apple ecosystem, Topiary is perfect!

@mimsical I made a “VIP” list for basically this purpose, and whenever I use my primary timeline I just unfollow accounts I no longer want as I come across them

@mimsical My number-one suggestion is to NOT prune me.

More seriously, I recently did a pass where I looked through several hundred profiles in my “following” list, checking their “Posts and Replies,” and if they hadn’t posted in a certain amount of time (I used 100 days, but you could adjust up or down) and I couldn’t remember seeing them in my like/boost notifications recently, I unfollowed them. It took more than 200 out.

@mimsical I also created a list of people I don’t want to miss anything from, and I use that as my “home” timeline now, only dipping into the real Home timeline when I’m out of content from the list.

This didn’t prune the list, but it also made pruning less urgent because now I feel like I’m on top of the things I most want to stay on top of, without the feeling of drinking from a fire hose.

Btw. the new version of Mastodon allows you to hide all posts from a list from your main timeline, so the reverse strategy is now also feasible - creating an "overflow" lists with accounts you don't want to clog up your main timeline.
Removes the need to unfollow those prolific accounts that you may still want to read every now & then when time allows...

@maxleibman @mimsical I really like this suggestion. I’ve been turning on notifications for key accounts but then I get lots of notifications which I don’t necessarily want. Creating a “goto” list is far more elegant! 🙏

Today’s todo!

jimkennedy,

@maxleibman @mimsical Not being a smartass, but how does it help you to unfollow people who don't post anyway? It doesn't cut down your timeline at all. Your followed list goes down by 200, but the timeline is the same, no?

@jimkennedy @mimsical Sorry, should have said this was my first step—makes the list that’s left easier to scroll through to do further processing. Easier to grok who’s who in the pile that’s left if it’s smaller. You’re correct that it doesn’t immediately impact the timeline; this is setup for further cuts.

jimkennedy,

@maxleibman @mimsical that makes sense.

@maxleibman @mimsical Me upping my activity so I don’t get pruned :).
