Has anyone else seen this odd macOS behavior?

After I restart my computer and open Safari, I usually want to open a couple windows on different desktops. Command-shift-N, which should open a new window, does nothing.

It only works after I open a new window using the menu once (File > New Window).

LauraLangdon,

@ehmatthes Hmm, I’m not seeing this (MacOS 14.4.1).

@rasterweb High five from a fellow travel humidifier person! Mine lives in my everyday bag (it’s watertight), and it’s absolutely essential to me. I do wish it were USB-C instead of micro USB, but that’s my only complaint. I hope yours keeps working for you!

Yesterday a student came to me with project questions. She was trying to learn some ground-level tool basics (how useState works in React, but details don’t matter), and she was just hopelessly confused: the pieces were there, fragments of nascent understanding littered all around, but somehow it just wasn’t coming together for her.

She walked me through her fragments of non-working code, and as I was trying to figure out how she’d got so lost, she popped back to her documentation source:

@tedinski @inthehands When I started using active learning techniques in my classes (math) my student evaluations completely polarized. Some students really hated me for it, because they felt like I wasn’t “teaching” them.

one of the pads on my glasses broke off (bad) so i swapped a new one in from an old pair (cool) but I couldn't get the tiny screw all the way back in (bad, probably) and also i scratched the lens with the screwdriver (less bad than you'd think, it's not really noticeable when wearing them) so now I'm back to square one and in the market for new glasses

LauraLangdon,

@skinnylatte And of course it shouldn’t matter whether the cops believed he was committing a crime; the only thing that matters is whether he was committing a crime, and but this “independent police auditor” is fully ready to let the cops police by vibes instead of laws.

“Bloom said an important part of the investigation will be to look at the language of the warning near the electrical outlet and whether officers can say specifically why they believed Robinson was committing a crime.”

A keyboard tweak I like:

I have a layer where numbers are arranged similar to a num pad.

But pressing the layer toggle key and shift to produce all the symbols I need during programming is kind of annoying.

To reduce these gymnastics, I added another layer with a one-shot layer toggle that exposes the symbols on the same locations of the numbers.

It's really good without modifiers (shift): hit the thumb key, then hit the symbol key, done.

@ctietze Yay, programmable keyboards! Mine is similar, but with the symbols labeled directly (like ! instead of Shift +1).

PSA: How to open a Tesla door in an emergency

I have friends that happily drive their kids around strapped into child seats in Teslas. I ask them a few questions about this, and I've never had a friend of mine who is a parent answer these questions satisfactorily:

  1. Do you know that Tesla doors might not open if there's no power?

  2. Do you know how to manually open the doors?

  3. Have you timed how long it would take you to get your kids out?

Here's how to get out
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=6PbRBbIGnv4

LauraLangdon,
@LauraLangdon@hachyderm.io avatar

@mekkaokereke Wow, it looks like if you have kids in rear-facing car seats you have exactly zero chance of getting them out through the doors, so your only option is to break the windows (all over the kids). And you kind of can’t rehearse that? 😨

Watching reviews it occurred to me that if interacting with 3D models is really, really good it’ll be a complete game-changer for and creating custom garments. You could make models match real bodies curve for curve, even as the same bodies change over time. Physical custom dress forms run $2000+ and match one body at one moment in time.

No clue whether the Vision Pro is that good, but something will be and I’m so excited!

@consumablejoy @knitting I went with this one. It measures 100g down to .01g, which should help with the yarn chicken. 😁 I used a kitchen scale yesterday for a pair of socks, but it only goes down to 1g and the rounding error was several rows’ worth. 🙃 And this one’s smaller, so better for the knitting kit.
