The host for the @kottke Mastodon account has been struggling to keep the service up (for months now) so I think I need to switch. Any recs? I just want something stable, a bigger instance (for easier federation), a place that's not going random war-block other instances on my behalf (I can manage that myself).

Morning. Heading home today, boo. We’ve got the short hop back to Aruba then we have to check in straight away for our overnight flight back to the UK. I’m dreading packing, why does everything that came out of a suitcase not want to go back in, even when you fold it carefully? I’m also trying to find an outfit for the plane that will fit in my backpack so I can change at the airport and not have to swelter this morning. What’s happening in your neck of the woods?

    It's really pretty inane how news orgs report, for example, that Sam Bankman-Fried "now faces up to 115 years in prison." That's just bull, and they know it. The theoretical statutory maximums for all counts added together consecutively add up to that, but this is NOT how federal sentencing guidelines work. And again, the news orgs KNOW this.

    @zachleat Woop! Mostly success! Thanks for the pointer. I know I tried the pathprefix before (I've had several trial-and-error attempts...). Everything looks good now, except the search box is missing. I tried adding a .nojekyll file but no change.

    Yes, the _pagefind folder wasn't uploaded, so I added a .nojekyll inside _site and pushed again. I read somewhere that Github Pages doesn't like Jekyll and ignores underscored folders.

    @maxleibman @mimsical Not being a smartass, but how does it help you to unfollow people who don't post anyway? It doesn't cut down your timeline at all. Your followed list goes down by 200, but the timeline is the same, no?

    @ICalzada @politicalscience @politicaltheory It's interesting to me as a non-academic to see the Catalan process written up as an academic concern. I wonder if you have any thoughts/studies on where we are now, four years after this paper? Also, from a statistics and analytical point of view, how do you treat the 770,000 ballots seized by the Spanish police, and therefore never counted?

    Regarding “back to the office”: Why is the commute the employee’s burden anyway? Make it part of the work time and have at it requiring people to come to the office. Three hours commute? You get 5 hours in the office.

    Employees are available immediately at home but if they’ve required in the office, the clock starts when they leave home. You rent their time, your choice to spend it on travel.

    @finestructure I like the idea but in my case the work day would be 9:00 leave home, 12:30 arrive office, join the 'where for lunch?' conversation, 13:00 - 14:00 short lunch, 14:00 -14:30 post-lunch coffee chats, 14:30 begin commute home. 😄

    Even as a joke, I would last about three days before quitting. I ❤️ #wfh

    The Spanish revolution in women's football continues apace, it seems, off the back of the ongoing situation.

    Still, this situation is wild. I don't think I've ever seen a coach that just won the get fired by their country shortly after.

    I hope Spain are able to re-build a much more healthy environment for their women to compete.

    @seachanger if it's any consolation, on this side of the Atlantic Sinéad's career wasn't so much cancelled as sent off on a different track. In Ireland she's always been a fucking legend. She herself said the 'cancellation' forced her to become a performer instead of a recording star, which was her strength anyway.

    @seachanger The pope's picture was just one of the incidences of Sinéad coming out swinging and never backing down. There was always so much more than those pricks wanted people to know. I hope we build a statue to her some day in Dublin. Her autobiography is great, btw, it's inspiring and also quite funny.
