I remember something else that could throw light on this. Back when they took away #TargetDisplay mode? The stated reason was that to support #5k#resolution, they had to make a custom timing chip to draw two screens side-by-side and then knit them together (to drive the display at 60Hz).
Could THIS be why the DC's on the die of the M1/M2 are so huge? They had to have two - one for each display, right? 🤷♂️
