#Cybersecurity#Apple#M1#Cryptography: "A newly discovered vulnerability baked into Apple’s M-series of chips allows attackers to extract secret keys from Macs when they perform widely used cryptographic operations, academic researchers have revealed in a paper published Thursday.
The flaw—a side channel allowing end-to-end key extractions when Apple chips run implementations of widely used cryptographic protocols—can’t be patched directly because it stems from the microarchitectural design of the silicon itself. Instead, it can only be mitigated by building defenses into third-party cryptographic software that could drastically degrade M-series performance when executing cryptographic operations, particularly on the earlier M1 and M2 generations. The vulnerability can be exploited when the targeted cryptographic operation and the malicious application with normal user system privileges run on the same CPU cluster." https://arstechnica.com/security/2024/03/hackers-can-extract-secret-encryption-keys-from-apples-mac-chips/
I admire #Fedora#Linux#Asahi persistence and commitment to getting Linux at such a significantly usable state on #Apple Silicon #Macs, but the lack of Touch ID and USB Thunderbolt support are non-starters. The great thing though, by the time my #M1 is no longer getting #macOS upgrades, it will have a solid third party operating system. Today, macOS is a polished fully supported desktop OS that works, has really great commercial apps. Any need for third party OS's can best be served by a VM.
ARGH! Wouldn't you THINK one of the FIRST TESTS the #FFMPEG 6.1 group would've done is test against compiling it on #MacOS#Intel? I mean that's TABLE STAKES isn't it? I mean I use #M1 AND Intel and would like to compile my universal binary, but get the error in the attached image! If anyone knows anyone on the FFMPEG team, please tap them on the shoulder...
I know I talk about it a lot, but I still can't believe that Linux is running on this M1 Macbook. It's insane how many applications just run out of the box. :blobfoxfloofhappy: I know it a little bit defeats the purpose of having a Macbook by putting Linux on it, but Linux on Mac hardware has always been so heckin' good.
hmmm - so, in the market for a new #macbookpro and torn between a 14" with a 1TB SSD and 16" with a 512GB SSD.
Do I need the larger screen or more storage?
My current MBP is a mid-2015 15.4" model so I've got my moneys worth out of it ... but it's starting to struggle now and isn't getting any OS updates so it's usefulness is deminishing.
It also "only" has a 250GB SSD and I'm nearly maxed out.
