Alright folks, it is time for another

This time I will do a chronological re-listen of all studio albums of a band I know very well, and which is without a doubt my favourite metal band:

the mighty Judas Priest 🤘

...hoping that some users will follow me on my journey (looking at you, @bestiaexmachina)

Kicking things off in the early 70s, here's Rocka Rolla:

Fun fact about : the band hated the outcome. They wanted to do something heavier, but the record company ignored their wish.

I like it though 🤷‍♂️

I did do a ranking of all albums last year:

https://metalhead.club/@derthomas/109550373353123849

Let's see if anything changes in this

This will also be my first time listening to Jugolator and Demolition.

Meanwhile, here's a psychodelic prog song by JP (not kidding):

🎵 Winter Retreat

I completely forgot what a great song this one is:

🎵 Run of the Mill

https://song.link/y/64IJJW0Iy8Y

At 8 minutes and 32 seconds it is also Priest's third longest song, and it has 70s written all over it, with only a hint of what would become the Judas Priest most people know.

Rob Halford mentioned that they kept their guitar play rather simple, to sound more heavy metal, but has some nice solos!

derthomas,
@derthomas@metalhead.club avatar

4 / n

Back last year I rated as "good album". And that fits, I am staying with that: 3 / 5

Ranking

  1. RockaRolla 3/5

Now the version I was listening to closed with a bonus track, Diamonds and Rust, which was recorded during the Sad Wings Of Destiny Sessions and is not the Sin After Sin version (thanks wiki).

The second album of my is already one of my favourites ...although that doesn't say much because I have like 10 favourite Priest albums.

The year is 1976, has 70s still written all over it, but the guitars are toned down and sound a lot heavier.

"Victim Of Changes" is a masterpiece, but I'll link the second song of the album, because I adore the razor sharp vocals that underline the lyrics of...

@trendskater depends... do you like 70s hard rock and early metal? If so, start with Sad Wings of Destiny.

It is definitely the album I'd recommend to anyone who thinks are Painkiller.

Victim Of Changes, The Ripper, Deceiver, Island of Domination and ...

The most surprising song might be Epitaph wich could be on any early Queen album.

Album number 3 on my Judas Priest was already hinted in a song on Sad Wings (do you know which one?).

Released only 1 year after SWOD in 1977, the guitars sound even more heavy and there's more Rob Halford trademark shrieks.

The album is of course Sin After Sin, and it starts with a fast paced number called...

🎵 Sinner

How fitting that Rob called his autobiography "Confess".

Let Us Prey / Call for the Priest starts as a Queen song that turns into a Deep Purple song only to become a Judas Priest song with Motörhead like drums. And with the Metal God. Great fast number!

derthomas,

Sin After Sin is a remarkable Judas Priest ablum. Not only does it contain two slow numbers, but also two covers (Diamonds and Rust, Race with the Devil).

The tempo has been picked up a notch and the guitars are heavy. This might be Priest's first "pure" heavy metal album.

is great, but not a masterpiece (to me).

Do you know the Canadian Speed Metal Band ? They are named after the opener of Judas Priest's fourth studio album "Stained Class".

This was the first album they recorded on the island of Ibiza.
And like with Rocka Rolla, they were not happy with the outcome.

In case you wonder, the top tiers of my system are:

4 Great
3,5 Good
...

TheWarlock666,

@derthomas I'm almost through reading Rob's biography, and I have to say I would take some of what he says with a grain of salt. Based on his description of "quitting" the band, there is a lot he could have done to fix it - but he did nothing. So he did, in fact, quit the band. There's also a pattern in his biography of a certain... "moral flexibility" based on his discussions around infidelity and law breaking. I'd say that some of the facts he puts forth are just his version of the "truth".

TheWarlock666,

@derthomas and of course, no disrespect meant to Rob - he is the Metal God. But after reading his book, I am going to read KK's book again - it might make more sense now. 😂

derthomas,
@derthomas@metalhead.club avatar

@TheWarlock666 of course in his bio we only hear his side. And I too found it a bit weird that they didn't talk to each other. I guess he wanted out to some degree, but I believe when he said that he immediately wanted back. But then why don't say anything?
On the other hand, why did he keep his first "boyfriend" for so long without talking about all the issues they had with him?
To that extend his version adds up. And reminds me a lot of myself actually 🫣

Angel Of Retribution was a strong comeback for Rob Halford, overall a good album 3,5 out of 5 cringeworthy Loch Ness choruses.

This was my second run through Nostradamus. I still like it. I would like to see it at the opera actually.

The title track is an absolute last! 🤘🎸

In terms of rating... 3,5 out of 5 scammers.

But, this album will stay out of my Judas Priest ranking. It is so different, I wouldn't know where to put it honestly.

How do you like this rather controversially received concept album?

Redeemer Of Souls is Judas Priest's first album ever recorded without K.K. Downing.

I can't say I like it much and I think this is Priest's weakest album with Rob. Verdict: 2,5/5

However, esp. thanks to Richie Faulkner, this album contains hints of their next record, oh and what album that would become!

After Redeemer Priest went on a farewell tour. But the energy Richie brought into the band ignited something.

He brought the fire back 🔥

I cannot thank him enough, because oh boy did they deliver 🤘

When I saw Judas Priest in 2018, they played Guardians and Rising From Ruins. I was blown away. I mean I knew the song before, but experiencing it live with all the fire and flames in the background was pure magic 🔥

I love the song ever since at it might as well be my favourite on Firepower.

Now that was released, this needs an update.

Invincible Shield is an incredible album, I couldn't make out any weaknesses. It deserves a 4.5 out of 5 which means: masterpiece.

However, I'd like to make another adaptation. After some spins, I cannot help but move Sad Wings of Destiny even further up. As much as I love Firepower and Invincible Shield, Sad Wings is just so darn good.

TheWarlock666,

@derthomas Such a fantastic album from such an awesome band! I remember listening to this tape in my Walkman back in 1982 while delivering newspapers (I was 13 at the time). Despite what Martin Popoff says, I feel this album is all killer and no filler. Easily one of my top 10 favourite albums. OOOH! I should do a list of my top 10 favourite albums...

derthomas,
@derthomas@metalhead.club avatar

@TheWarlock666 I like Martin Popoff, but sometimes I also disagree with him. And yes, please do a top 10!

TheWarlock666,

@derthomas I agree - I know that JP weren't happy with the result of RockaRolla (and they hated the album cover!) but I honestly like the album. It's certainly not typical Priest, but it's got some great tracks on it. Very similar to Point Of Entry for me.

You know ...I know nothing about harmonies and stuff, so it is really interesting to read what you have to say, coming from a professional side. 😀

Oh I can't wait to see that list! And no worries, they have 18 studio albums, so that takes time.
