maerlynofmiria,

The thing I don’t understand is, why on Earth or under it do sighted people seem to think that the only way to clean something is to scrape it with a fork, regardless of how they know that what they’re scraping with a fork is a non-stick surface, which can get damaged when scraped with forks. And they only seem to do this with someone else’s equipment, never theirs. I had to throw one Forman grill that didn’t have removable plates away thanks to someone doing that three years ago, this person being someone who worked in the apartment building I’m living in who should have known better, and now I’m having to figure out whether or not I can get spare plates for the grill I have now, once more because someone, this time a staff member at a hotel I was staying at during the time the lift in my apartment building was broken, decided “Oh, let’s get the fork out and scrape away, regardless of how a Forman grill’s plates are non-stick”. And when you confront them about it, they say “Oh I was in a hurry”, or “how was I supposed to know that’d damage the plates”? I mean, are george Forman grills really that uncommon these days, regardless of how I’ve seen them in multiple stores right up to the present day? And, of course, when you tell them they damaged the plates, they act like it’s no big thing. Of course not. At least not to them. They’re not the ones who have to deal with burger patties sticking to the plates, and they’re sure not the ones having to figure out if they can find replacement plates anywhere. Ok, rant mode disengaged.

You said...

There's the crux of the issue.

No one ever takes care of our stuff like us.

It would be nice if they did, I always try to afford the respect for other people's shit the same as I would my own, but the reality is that other's don't respect our stuff like they would their own.

That's a sad social commentary my friend :(

.

maerlynofmiria,

@tallship And yet if we were to do that to something of theirs, we'd never ever ever hear the end of it. That's why I've never indulged my fantasies of getting vindictive enough to do something right back to something of someone's who broke something of mine.

@maerlynofmiria

never had that issue w/a Geo Forman Grill - I have two originals. I've seen the one's they make nowadays (they fuckin' suck donkey dicks).

The originals were total qual, and fun to cook on, easy to clean but you did have to make sure you didn't submerge them.

the non-stick aspect? I dunno. If something sticks then it isn't non-stick, the implication being that it's a shit product.

If this is truly a recurring prob, I recommend going back to iron skillets - can't be beat!

maerlynofmiria,

@tallship Oh it was non-stick till someone got atr the plates with a fork.

If you like those George Forman Grills (um.... who doesn't like George Forman?), then considering I saw some here and there and these newfangled one's don't seem to much resemble the originals, perhaps scouring garage sales (or cough, cough, eBay) for those first generation one's might be a good idea.

But yah, using a metal utensil on a non-stick surface? hm... like those old Pace Picante Sauce commercials.... "Get a rope!"

So many went directly to storage for counter space.

maerlynofmiria,

@tallship Oh it's not the grill that's at fault. If I can find a new set of plates for the one I've got, there'll not be a problem. the first generation ones are a problem though, as those didn't have removable plates.

@maerlynofmiria

Yes, precisely why I listed it as a shortcoming of the originals - you really had to take good care of it and make sure not to submerge it.

Removable plates would be a welcome upgrade, but the one's they sell nowadays just don't seem as durable as the old ones.

maerlynofmiria,

@tallship Oh this thing's plates would have lasted me for years if not for little Miss "I'm Gonna scrape It with a Fork". I had one once that got stolen whose plates lasted me literally for seven years with no issue at all.

simon,

@maerlynofmiria Nope, it should be common knowledge that this kind of thing ruins non-stick surfaces. But I also wouldn't trust random staff to clean my stuff properly. If you have removable plates you can soak them in hot water for a while and then a gentle use of the rough side on one of those double-sided sponges usually does the job.

maerlynofmiria,

@simon I always use the sponge, but at the moment, the plates are damaged to the point where I can't do burger patties on the grill, and I've not got a clue where I can get replacement plates.

simon,

@maerlynofmiria Do you know what kind of grill you have? If so, have you tried searching Amazon for replacements? TBH, you might be better off buying a new grill. They're not expensive, even the nice big ones with replaceable plates.

maerlynofmiria,

@simon The one I have now I paid over a hundred dollars for, and I'm thinking that it'd be much cheaper to buy replacement plates than it would be to buy a whole new grill when there's nothing at all the matter with the grill itself.
