The conversation shouldn't be "do or do not defederate from Meta" it should be anticipating different ways Meta could harm what we value, and preparing accordingly.
@edendestroyer Can you spell that out? What is the exact scenario you fear repeating, and what's your plan to prevent it? I'm not saying we shouldn't defederate, I'm saying we have a crafty adversary and we need to be thoughtful.
@edendestroyer Their app could fizzle. If I had to bet, I'd guess it isn't a huge strategic priority for them. If we split the fediverse preemptively, we've basically done their damage for them. I'm not sure what we lose by waiting to defederate, should the need indeed arise. In the meantime, we have more people joining the fediverse, more time to up our game about improving the experience we offer, and sell them on our culture and values. So that in a schism they come with us.
I will demand defederation of any instance that begins to federate with subversive Cambridge Analytica traitors that foisted Trump on America for the Russians. Or any other billionaire social media corporation.
@kevinrns I'm in no way defending Meta. I'm saying we shouldn't underestimate them and we should be smart in how we respond. You don't base your battle plans on how much you hate the enemy, you base them on what you expect the enemy to do, and where you perceive its weaknesses.

Facebook Promotion is something we are going to get, tjey have more money than well many billionaires. facebook employees can sign at corporate direction whenever they want, just for example. Put up with the facebpok promotion as long as you need to, then block it.
Defederate any instance that connects to facebook. Make it automatic in the mastodon code.
@maria It might be but we should be gaming it out. They're gonna be smart about it and we have to be too. Preemptively defederating and splitting the fediverse could also just be preemptively jumping to the worst case scenario of what we'd have to do anyway - it's not a cost free response.
