Oct 30. Did the education system inspire you or put you off writing?

The German system did nothing to inspire me. We weren't taught creative writing, and we mostly read classics in school.

My year in the US was different. I was encouraged to write, praised, and taught basic skills. If this had been the case in my homeland, I might have gone for a different career path.

But who knows if I had been happier as a full-time writer?

@anderlandbooks interesting. Primary school in Australia for me (circa 1990's) involved mostly writing fiction/ let me choose to write mostly stories. As a teacher I know its more of an even mix of a range of text types now.

@ElisesWritings things might have changed since I went to school here too (90's). But the difference between the college class I was attending at our high school and my German class at the gymnasium was dramatic for sure.

Granted, it was a special program at that high school too, but in general, I find creativity wasn't encouraged much in my German school. I never build a plastic volcano or the like either.

@anderlandbooks I remember building a castle out of cardboard box in year 8 (a pretty good, realistically painted one too). I likely did diaramas and stuff in primary school that I don't really recall. I was a 90's kid too, and its only gotten more creative here since.

@ElisesWritings I envy you!

@anderlandbooks

But did you read classics or did you dissect their embalmed carcasses?

@CatFoxBirdLady dissected them, of course. I've kept a high dislike for Goethe and Schiller from these days. It just felt so outdated and unreal.

@anderlandbooks

Goethe is that interesting case of classic who can, in one and the same work, prove that he was a master and also a complete arse, even for his time.
I posit that a critical reading of Wahlverwandschaften could be the well deserved stake into the heart of sentimental romance.

@CatFoxBirdLady my take on it? Werther was a stalker. And the hero of Kabale und Liebe should have simply talked to his girl instead of murdering her, jealous moron.

oh. Some deep old resentment just welled up...

@anderlandbooks

Goethe is the patron saint of deeply toxic MLIs and a fascinating study in how social prestige works. And that's what I mean by saying that reading him critically would be extremely educational.
