Aphrodite / Demeter . I am pleased with this dialogue.

"I bow to no husband and I still take my pleasure with men and I get nothing."
"How about you forget about gods and men and take your pleasure with a goddess instead?" Aphrodite purred.
A cute, pink blush crept over Demeter's cheeks.
"Is… is that an invitation?" she asked.
Aphrodite gave her a wet kiss on the lips.
"Do you need one?"

16/01:Do you have any writing rituals?

Yes? I've been answering and prompts rather religiously but my WIPs are suddenly at a place where the prompts actually interrupt my writing flow 😐 .
Thinking about whether I should or should not answer every morning isn't much better.
So that's probably it for the time being.
(Or rather, let's see how long it/I will last😁 .)

Hey
Any recommendations for books with nonbinary or transmen main characters? Feeling like I could really use the representation, but all I'm finding are transwomen, and that's... not me. As long as it's fiction, any genre is okay.

Raven Tower by Ann Leckie comes to mind, if you want fantasy.
The protagonist of Witch King by Martha Wells is technically a demon who is gifted a human body but their female body is killed and they have to switch to a male in the book. Also fantasy.

CatFoxBirdLady,
@CatFoxBirdLady@creativewriting.social avatar

@EVDHmn @CrescentSays @bookstodon

Witch King is a standalone. Wells's current and very well received series is Diaries of a Murderbot which begins with All Systems Red

CatFoxBirdLady,
@CatFoxBirdLady@creativewriting.social avatar

@EVDHmn @CrescentSays @bookstodon

Witch King is not part of a series at all so read it anytime, if you think you will like it (I did).
If you want to read the Murderbot series (also fits the original question as the MC insists that they are an "it") then the first Book, All Systems Red, is a good starting point. If you would rather read a short story first before deciding about the books there is Compulsive, which is also the earliest story in the internal timeline of Murderbot.

It's nice to read folklore from further north. In the Alps region women must not do chores of any kind during that time or the Truden (Wild Hunt) will pay them special attention.

Currently in the middle of this dystopian science fiction novel, written by Mary Shelley and set at the end of 21st century. It's 2090's but the flavour is quite 19th-century-ish: people are still using carriages and there's conflict Greece-Turkey, as if we were still in 1919.
Have you read it?

Working on a idea for a change and could do with help for a pregnancy timeline.

Young couple - just kids really - fool about and she gets pregnant. Let's say that's late summer, end of harvest maybe.

I need to figure out:

  • How soon she realises
  • How long she keeps it hidden
  • How quickly the parents can arrange a wedding for these only-just-old-enough kids to preserve some social standing

For context, this is 1890s, small town in Northern England.

Noticing is a question of knowledge and character. Will she notice her first missing period, will she understand what it means, she take it seriously? If the answer to all of this is a yes and the parents on both sides are not given to drama then they can get their license, have their banns read and marry before she's more than 12 weeks along.

CatFoxBirdLady,
@CatFoxBirdLady@creativewriting.social avatar

@drinkswriter @writers

Slow off the mark opens endless possibilities to torture that character. For example, she'll probably be irregular, being young, but it might well be painful enough that she'll notice the absence of pain, even if she manages not to notice any other changes.
If you want the families to have a chance to preserve some face she needs to built up a good panic before the four month mark.

Nov 28th: How do you approach a fight scene or other high-action scenes?

With brevity. I don't like to read fighting scenes for the sake of fighting alone, and I don't like to write them either.

Today's obscure Greek mythology fact:

Echo had a daughter (with Pan) who used her knowledge of magic to take revenge on Hera for her mother's death.

It's the revenge sequel no one talks about...

CatFoxBirdLady,
@CatFoxBirdLady@creativewriting.social avatar

@TarkabarkaHolgy

The Homeric (and Orphic? I am not entirely certain which one is quoted in the Daphnis and Chloe retelling) version of Echo is gorier but brutality seems preferable to Ovid's spitefulness.
Mind you my issues with Ovid are so bad I sometimes wonder about reincarnation.

CatFoxBirdLady,
@CatFoxBirdLady@creativewriting.social avatar

@TarkabarkaHolgy

Roughly: Echo is so musical that the muses teach her several of their arts. Pan is jealous, especially as Echo is not interested in men, women or Pan. He makes some humans manic and they murder her by dismemberment. Gaia absorbs the pieces of Echo's body and sort of keeps her alive but can't fully restore her voice, hence echo.

Oct 30. Did the education system inspire you or put you off writing?

The German system did nothing to inspire me. We weren't taught creative writing, and we mostly read classics in school.

My year in the US was different. I was encouraged to write, praised, and taught basic skills. If this had been the case in my homeland, I might have gone for a different career path.

But who knows if I had been happier as a full-time writer?

CatFoxBirdLady, (edited )
@CatFoxBirdLady@creativewriting.social avatar

@anderlandbooks

But did you read classics or did you dissect their embalmed carcasses?

CatFoxBirdLady,
@CatFoxBirdLady@creativewriting.social avatar

@anderlandbooks

Goethe is that interesting case of classic who can, in one and the same work, prove that he was a master and also a complete arse, even for his time.
I posit that a critical reading of Wahlverwandschaften could be the well deserved stake into the heart of sentimental romance.

CatFoxBirdLady,
@CatFoxBirdLady@creativewriting.social avatar

@anderlandbooks

Goethe is the patron saint of deeply toxic MLIs and a fascinating study in how social prestige works. And that's what I mean by saying that reading him critically would be extremely educational.

Oct 13: Antagonist POV: What would a perfect day be like for you?

Uhm. There's no true antagonist in . So, I'll have to pass on that one 😔

CatFoxBirdLady,
@CatFoxBirdLady@creativewriting.social avatar

@anderlandbooks

I tend to give my MCs plenty of irritants but rarely anybody who does enough to be a true antagonist.

There is one short story with an antagonist that the MC was not even aware of. One WIP was supposed to have an entire cadre of villains but
i. I don't know enough Americans to feel comfortable writing them
ii. my MCs create enough issues just being themselves.

Antagonists are a popular concept, I am beginning to wonder why I hardly ever use them.

Book 2: “Cat Burglar Black” by #RichardSala.

I saw some of his art online and thought it looked like “Invisible Hands” from Liquid Television, which I LOVED. Same artist! This didn’t have quite the same level of twisted, creepiness as that animated series, but I was so happy to find his work in comic form. There’s more too.

Someone stitched together all the “#InvisibleHands”. The voice acting is 🤌🏽 https://youtu.be/n5sP4yRb8Mw

Panel 1, someone in bed, their head covered in bandages, eyes staring and teeth bared. A weak whisper: "Come closer, Katherine. Let me see you..." Panel 2 a severe looking older woman with her hands around the shoulders of a tentative, white-haired teen: "Don't be shy. Say hello to your aunt."
