So according to Germany's STIKO, I don't "need" either a covid 19 nor flu vaccine... but it seems like it'd be very smart to get these?

Is Germany just generally against regular vaccination of it's population?

@thisismissem STIKO just says what they recommend “for everybody”, but you can get things against their recommendation. I got my Flu Shot yesterday

thisismissem,
@thisismissem@hachyderm.io avatar

@janl mmm, maybe so, but my local praxis won't allow me to get either a flu shot or covid booster, if it's against STIKO’s recommendation, so I've gotta go searching for a clinic that'll offer me it

@thisismissem opp38.de is no BS about this. See the website for the vaccination shop opening hours and just walk up

@thisismissem After all, this is where Waldorf schools, homeopathy and "biological" food were invented.

@thisismissem I've read about this issue a few times now, it actually surprised me that Germany goes for this strategy. Living in Austria I got my Covid shot from my doctor in October.

@thisismissem Not Germany as a hole, but our Stiko somehow ended up being antivax...

@Schrank@phpc.social avatar

@mxk @thisismissem I have no clue about stiko currently, but Prof. Drosten (a man I trust about covid) has good arguments against a wide vaccination, although I don't follow his argument and look for an appointment 🤷

@thisismissem @juergen_hubert and I were discussing this right now.

I don't think it's a great strategy.

thisismissem,
@thisismissem@hachyderm.io avatar

@onepict @juergen_hubert I mean, I've never gotten a flu vaccine in 8 years I've lived here, doctors refused me when I asked for one.. and then I'd get sick.

onepict,
@onepict@chaos.social avatar

@thisismissem @juergen_hubert are there no exemptions like for asthma or something?

juergen_hubert,
@juergen_hubert@thefolklore.cafe avatar

@onepict @thisismissem That 12 month minimum pause is for "high-risk patients".

I qualify, due to diabetes. But still.

onepict,
@onepict@chaos.social avatar

@juergen_hubert @thisismissem ow wow, that's even worse.

mwfc,

@onepict

Depends on the doc. I am getting my flu shots for many years already and am on 6th covid shot. There are different opinions and some rather odd docs (and overage)
Younger docs are more up to it.

There is a campaign to get Covid and flu shots now. And some other shots have been updated for me too, about 2-3 years ago. And it just now moved into the recommendation list for asthma. So yes, having the right doc matters.

@mwfc @onepict @thisismissem

It's good that some doctors take more responsibility for their patients.

But that doesn't change the official recommendations by the RKI:

mwfc,

@juergen_hubert
I know them. Worked in the Public Health Office during the pandemic. I have seen too much politics involved.

And yes, in the end it is a recommendation and docs are allowed to override. And they do.

Worst that can happen is refusal to do it, or pay yourself. (as STIKO recommendation is sometimes tied to refund from the insurance)

@onepict @thisismissem

juergen_hubert,
@juergen_hubert@thefolklore.cafe avatar

@onepict @thisismissem Yeah, that recommendation to wait at least 12 months after the last booster or infection is just plain nuts.

I hadn't thought that the German anti- policy could be worse than in the USA or UK, yet here we are...

thisismissem,
@thisismissem@hachyderm.io avatar

@juergen_hubert @onepict I mean, I had covid last Christmas, I'd rather not repeat.

juergen_hubert,
@juergen_hubert@thefolklore.cafe avatar

@thisismissem @onepict I had it this February, after a company event (as I knew it would happen, eventually).

I produced mucus at a faster rate than at any other time of my life, but otherwise there don't seem to be any lasting effects. Still, I'd rather take any precautions that I can so that the next infection will be as mild as possible.

alxndr,

@juergen_hubert @onepict @thisismissem The head of Germany's STIKO has advocated against mandatory measles vaccination at a homeopathy conference, and stated that he wouldn't let his own children be vaccinated against Covid. So there's that...

onepict,
@onepict@chaos.social avatar

@alxndr @juergen_hubert @thisismissem ouf that's not good, MPs and healthcare professionals have flirted with homeopathy. Like the time a homeopath started a petition to treat ebola with homeopathy and a new Zealand green MP signed it.

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/fight-ebola-with-homeopathy-mp/WSHKJBDWS5FRJQCR3ILFNGZJE4/

It's frankly frightening when trained healthcare professionals consider that kind of thing.
