Rasta,

I can't remember (yet), who I promised to show a particular photo to, that was not with me at the time. I have 100 GB of photos, I can't carry them with me.

I have temporary access today, but can't remember what I was supposed to show them? (Go figure?)
I only have one hour until I have to be on the road to pick up tires.

I'll try to remember, maybe it will come out on one of my stories later?

REMEMBER TO LOOK BOTH WAYS @dgar before you cross the street!

You can easily carry 100 GB of photos -- in your WALLET.

Rasta,

@ecsd I'm doing that now, but I'm not a mobile person. I never had a smart phone until 2013, and it took 10 years to begin using it at all. I'm a total computer geek but have to make due with tiny mobile screens sometimes, so I am learning. I only have 200gb of storage on my phone. But plug in a 2TB portable drive to my Chromebook when on the move.
My master PC holds the libraries, only a few go with me

I keep the SDxC avenue in mind. The price for 1TB chips keeps dropping. I await the day when I can carry all 15 TB of my data in my wallet.

Rasta,

@ecsd An awful loss should you misplace it, damage it, etc. I have most of my data backed up on offline 4TB drives. But I lost a drive in 2005 that wasn't backed up and never fully recovered. The bigger the hard drive or flash drive storage, the bigger the loss. I like to split them up on different storage but for carrying with me, I do bring large USB sticks to carry data, and I can plug my camera in and download the SD Card, so I can leave a year of photos on the card.

@Rasta

Part of the storage regimen is that one factors in the cost of redundancy up front. The iron rule ZERO of I.T. is: never risk the original. (= always have a backup.) I might consolidate 2 1TB drives on a new 2 TB SSD, but only because I retain the originals. One has to do that /twice/ before the original disks can be abandoned. In fact, Johnny Appleseed: if cost were no barrier, spread copies widely. [Just mark them chronologically.] The "keep copies in separate locations" rule should come into play somewhere in there.

Not easy to always follow: it should be that losing /A/ master is never an issue. As long as one can restore the contents from somewhere with a minimum of loss. Before all masters of A are lost.

Rasta,

@ecsd I often share things with others as triple redundancy. I grow seeds, and often give extras to neighbours. If I have a bad year, I know where I can get more seeds. Old software I used to save, since I worked on PCs for less fortunate that could not afford new ones, and didn't need to be online, but needed documents and things. I kept parts from 8086 on and started dumping them after others got into phones

  • Rasta,

@accretionist Wow, I've had similar near-misses. In Bermuda, I did a lot of biking with ear buds, and returned to an American navy base where our ship was. An armed guard ordered me to remove them, not permitted on base. It was middle of the night, no traffic, and I said OK, and ignored the demand and began heading to my ship. I almost made it, when the red lights came on and they caught me just before I could disappear

  • Rasta,

@accretionist I know, we call them Meat Heads in the Canadian Forces. LOL , but they have improved since my beginnings, they now are more independent. Real crimes don't get hidden anymore

Wrong way drivers kill the most people.

    Rasta,

@GoatRoper There's no safe space on the sidewalk either. It's drivers in general. @dgar
