"Transgender people can be baptized, Vatican says"

Well, that was unexpected. And also highly inconsistent with the theology they spouted the last two decades.

I mean, honestly - until the 2000's we could get our names changed in the parish registry.

Why now & why don't I trust that this means something?

Oh wait; that's right - anyone and everyone can already get baptized! That's been the case for the last 1300 years or so.

"It also said that transgender people can be godparents and witnesses to weddings. People in same sex marriages can also be witnesses but cannot be godparents."

Aaaand there you have it; we can get baptized and so on, but we would have to accept that in their eyes we will always only be the sex/gender we were assigned at birth.

Never trust the Church. The media is going to run with this as some sort of acceptance of trans people when it very much is not.

Pope Francis is fighting a tough battle against the intransigent Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith - and he fights it alone.

In 2019, Francis wrote to a group of transgender Catholics saying "God loves you just as you are."

For what that's worth...
