A rare moment of tenderness with Australia's most dangerous bird (really).

/because this is the internet, I want to make it abundantly clear that I adore magpies. Absolutely adore them. Rooted for bloody Collingwood as a kid I loved them so much. Imagine that.

@ct_bergstrom 'rooting' has a different meaning in Australia 😭🇦🇺

Now I'm wondering what the Bird Danger Charts are like for the USA - early this evening, I saw a rather large owl nearly fly into a jogger!

(Near Volunteer Park. Owl - and jogger - looked fine. Former sat on a low branch and glowered at the latter - and me, an innocent bystander. Possibly a barred owl? After a minute or so, it silently flew off - right above my head. First time I've seen a wild owl up-close - despite hearing loads of tawny owls growing up in Derbyshire...)

@coprolite9000 Barred owls definitely do this. There was one that stole hats and goggles from skiers at Hyak.

jswilkins,

@ct_bergstrom I too love maggies (not The Maggies), but I always found that if they get to know you outside of nesting season, they leave you alone.

I love corvids

@LaNaehForaday @ct_bergstrom (Australian magpies are artamids cosplaying as corvids.)

WOW!!! I did not know this and just read all about it. That's awesome. Here in New Mexico, we have our own magpie. The black billed!

This guy was perched on a garden stake, I was bent over weeding ... When I stood up we had a chat ... Giggles

These are just two of a 20 photo session they would put up with

@ct_bergstrom I'm sorry but cassowaries!

@Oozenet

How many cassowary injuries are there per year in Australia?

Because there are many thousand magpie injuries.

Sorry, I've already been well-actually-ed so many times tonight....
