After 3 logicboard replacements over 6 weeks, my Samsung washing machine seems to be working again.

Getting it reconnected to my Wi-Fi so that I get the push notifications when it’s done instead of the awful 60 seconds of Samsinging was nearly painful enough to make me start an open source smart home appliance company.

I regret to inform that after the 7th load of laundry—an hour after my post—my Samsung washing machine broke again.

Samsung is refunding the "repair" cost (~5000 SEK) and giving up. The washing machine is 3 years old. The EU mandate of a 10 year warranty on the motor will not spare the planet from this e-waste since some other component has failed.

I cannot recommend against Samsung appliances strongly enough.

So… how difficult would it be to create an open source hardware washing machine where every component is repairable or replaceable? This seems like a fully commoditized product category.

I am inspired by https://www.openfunk.co/ and its blender.

RrhrDnt,

@Jeremiah uh the openfunk blender is so cool! Thanks, I did not see that before. Got super hyped. We need more of these things!
I assume though that washing machines are a bit more complex due to the water management?

@RrhrDnt I genuinely want to meet with an industrial engineer who has worked on washing machines to understand more about how they work, the notable innovations over the last few decades, and what their dream machine would like.

A washing machine seems more complicated than a blender and probably requires metal parts that are not as easy to manufacture on demand.

That is so disappointing. I have heard that their newer appliances are not the same quality as they used to be. We have a huge washer dryer pair of theirs from maybe 11 years ago. I love these. I dread finding replacements. Ask your repair guy what brand they trust.

@Jeremiah I swear I will never buy another Samsung electronic product. They appear to have managed to turn every device they sell into a self-important, ad-encrusted, privacy-busting, barely-functional appliance. How have they done this so thoroughly?

I'm still not used to reading sentences like that. Hello boring dystopia my old friend.

(though let's not talk about my new coffee machine...)

@lukem The "smart" feature of a Samsung washing machine truly only has 1 user benefit.
