"Bluesky" has still not federated in any meaningful sense as far as I can tell but

It is now possible to read a bsky account via RSS, and it has long been possible to read a Mastodon account via RSS, so in principle you could wire up an rss reader with a mix of Mastodon and bsky accounts

@mcc I still remember when Friendfeed allowed aggregating RSS sources from multiple platforms to build a unified personal profile 8-/

Estrusflask,

@mcc is Bluesky going to be federating with Mastodon?
I think a large, federated series of social networks would be much better than one single Twitter or Twitter replacement.

@Estrusflask No, Bluesky is going to federate, but they have their own protocol.

My evaluation is that Bluesky's protocol is not only unnecessary, but it exists solely to (1) prevent federation with services like ActivityPub, and (2) make it very difficult for anyone to ever create a federation partner that isn't inherently subsidiary to Bluesky. I find it disappointing. I think you could improve on ActivityPub, but I don't think this is the way to do it.

Estrusflask,

@mcc So that's the exact opposite, more segregation.
