almost done now. 🥳 Not sure if I like the (s) as they take away quite a bit of light. Also, electrical problems still unresolved. But the electricians are coming today, so I have high hopes. 😇

Close up of studio desk with PC, speakers, 6 Roland Boutique synthesizers, Monitor controller, microphone arm, display and my Klein + Hummel speakers.
Tools (screwdriver, scissors, cable ties, etc.) on my second rack.

@amadeus that looks very neat mate! Hopefully the electricity is fixed by now.

@solidtrax Thanks! 😊 I might have to get a bigger UPS. Or invest into a solar system as there seems to be insufficient and unstable voltage. But the electricians are still investigating. 🙏

@amadeus Nice progress! Before I read "acoustic panel" I thought those were some very fancy electrostatic speakers. Is that WD-40 top left in the tools pic but no Duct tape? 😜️

amadeus,
@amadeus@mstdn.social avatar

@plaimbock Hahahaha! 😝 Now more than ever, WD40 has become almost an everyday necessity for us. Especially to seal (and occasionally lubricate) metals of any kind. Duct tape, on the other hand, I have not used too much. 🫣

Bearfaced,

@amadeus ah the tricky balance between good looks and acoustic perfection, I think there will always be compromises. I like to live with a configuration for a while and change if and when I find the courage! My room is far from ideal but it's a comfortable place to hide away from the world, and I'm so used to the less than ideal acoustics that I manage somehow 🤣

amadeus,
@amadeus@mstdn.social avatar

@Bearfaced Yeah, I think I will stick with it for a while and see if I can get used to it. Otherwise, like you said, I can always make adjustments down the road. The most important thing for me is that I feel comfortable in the room as well. Besides, to get the acoustics right, I would have to do a lot more than just set up my four panels anyway. 🫣☺️

stahlbrandt,

@amadeus That is looking very neat, congratulations! Yes, those serious absorbers are towering quite tall and the room does seem to get the main light from the direction you took the pictures. Accoustics can be messy.

amadeus,
@amadeus@mstdn.social avatar

@stahlbrandt Yes, it can be. 😅 I was thinking of cutting them in half to make them shorter and then patching together a third panel from the two leftover pieces and hanging that third panel from the roof. But that's something for a little later in the year, I guess, since I'd also have to change (or make from scratch) the fabric sleeves for all three panels.

stahlbrandt,

@amadeus On the ceiling: Ok so one hanging trap as well. Maybe the room acoustics are such that you want to absorb the higher frequencies and their reflections in the ceiling and a narrower absorber with less width, stealing less height, but in a pair could work. I assume you have or want to measure the room acoustics and for the type of jobs you do. Let me/your followers know how you proceed. Very cool! 👍🏻

@stahlbrandt I'm not striving for perfection this time though. Because I can't currently afford it and I also don't mind if it's not perfect from the get go. In this phase of my life my focus is on creativity first. And also, I imagine that by now, with more experience, I should be able to work around at least some of the imperfections of the space. 😇

stahlbrandt,

@amadeus Sounds like a smart move. As so often, experience will let us cut corners without risking certain, important aspects of quality. Six years ago I had plans for a perfect space close to the house where we live, but the cost for the “raw building” turned out to be higher than what I had anticipated as max, so I scrapped that and instead use a temporary, imperfect setup inside the living house. Just keyboard recording and listening as is, no advanced mic/analog input.

@stahlbrandt Sometimes a "perfect" space can block the creative flow. My previous studio, for instance, was so complex that I had to obey its concept and couldn't experiment freely. This was at the expense of amazing outboard gear and very good acoustics. Nowadays I almost enjoy being limited in one way or another. I guess the move from macOS to Linux has also had an influence, as has a narrower range of available tools. I don't know, but at the moment I kind of dig that! 😎

stahlbrandt,

@amadeus Thanks for the extra details. Quite a switch from MacOS to Linux I’d say, but definitely interesting and the tools are probably maturing.

@stahlbrandt Oh yes, they are indeed! 🥳

@stahlbrandt I quickly went over to DDG and saw that REW is available for : http://www.roomeqwizard.com/
So I guess I will take a closer look at it soon. 🤓 I will post the results, of course.

@stahlbrandt I have not measured the room yet. It will be interesting to see if there are tools for this on . I used to use https://rodetest.com/. In my previous studio (which I shared with a good friend) we had the acoustics done by WSDG and among many other things (like massive (s) in the corners and even on the ceiling in the back of the room) there was also a ceiling sail on top of the listening spot. Still, we used a on top of all of that to get it right. 🫣
