@linmob probably configuring a compose key would be enough to access German chars with this us like keyboard. Here my Sway config line that use Right-Alt input * xkb_options compose:ralt. I hope there is an unused key on the pinephone keyboard.

Then, typing R-Alt o e give a œ.

@stacyharper There's no key (that's convenient to type) that I never use (and I wonder if a AltG+3 combo thing like £ (a symbol I never use) would even work). I was considering the US intl layout, but... never started going down that road.
