@daringfireball If you want stickers request them from Apple at time of purchase. It’s totally unnecessary to ship what are essentially extra waste materials in the box when the likelihood is that they will never be used.

@daringfireball The only thing missing from the hydraulic press was the artists themselves. That ad would have been a bit too graphic, but some would say not too far from the point considering how some people also feel that AI technology is poised to replace the human element in many aspects as well.

I wonder what ads Apple has planned for WWDC 🤪

Early iPad Pro Geekbench results (if true) make it out to be basically double the performance of my M1 Mac mini. Double the single core score, double the multicore score, and double the graphics score 👀 It's only been three years!

vanitalo,
@vanitalo@mastodon.social avatar

@BasicAppleGuy It’s annoying that Apple neglects the iPad mini so much. It’s the best iPad IMO, but it could really benefit from more regular updates that give it more Pro features.

When I finally pull the trigger, a new 13" iPad Pro w/ 16GB RAM, keyboard & stylus is gonna cost me €3,107. It would be by far the most powerful computer I own.

That's more than twice as much as what I paid for the Mac mini I do all my development on. It even beats out my high-end gaming PC whose GPU alone was €1800.

All of that goes to waste because it’s paired with a simplified, stripped-down OS using the same technology stack and limitations as a $300 Netflix device for your grandparents

vanitalo,

@stroughtonsmith Apple needs to discontinue the iPad Pro line and introduce the MacPad!

@stroughtonsmith But can the new Apple Pencil Pro be used with the Vision Pro for VR lightsaber duels? 👀🤪

stroughtonsmith, to random
@stroughtonsmith@mastodon.social avatar

These new iPads Pro are clearly the best iPads ever made, and most powerful hardware in this form factor by a long shot.

Which is why it pains me that the most excitement I can drum up is an exasperated sigh

vanitalo,
@vanitalo@mastodon.social avatar

@stroughtonsmith It doesn’t matter how much power or hardware upgrades Apple throws at the iPad platform. The operating system is fundamentally broken (especially for iPad Pro) and needs to be completely redesigned.

Given Apple’s track record of lacklustre iPadOS advancements year on year, I don’t expect any groundbreaking announcements at WWDC that will fix the fundamental flaws in the iPad’s operating system.

Adding AI functionality to iPadOS won’t provide any solutions to that either!

Just posted on Six Colors: The iPad Pro is no longer the future, so what’s next?

https://sixcolors.com/post/2024/05/the-ipad-pro-is-no-longer-the-future-so-whats-next/

vanitalo,
@vanitalo@mastodon.social avatar

@craiggrannell @jsnell This is why I think Apple should make a new touchscreen MacBook form factor instead of just iterating the iPad Pro which despite all the iterations has not really evolved.

The issue I have with the iPad Pro when trying to use it as a laptop is there are too many compromises, too many limitations! (1/2)

vanitalo,
@vanitalo@mastodon.social avatar

Despite that I’d like a touchscreen tablet without a keyboard sometimes, when I have to attach an iPad to a bulky/heavy keyboard/trackpad it makes the iPad far less compelling for me and iPadOS is also too limiting for laptop work for me.

I’d like Apple to make a real hybrid device, not something that can become hybridish by attaching a bunch of accessories… maybe we’ll need to wait a few more years for that though. (2/2)

Final Cut Pro, Logic and Xcode were the ‘pro apps’ of the Mac era, but the pro apps of the iPad are tools like Procreate. Though iPad has moved towards the Mac over time, it's unlikely to replace it. Traditionally, Apple hasn’t really provided a whole lot of dedicated APIs a high-end illustration app could take advantage of; perhaps that is one of the axes of progression Apple could double down on, and maybe a new first-party AI-enhanced, layered, pro drawing app would make sense for dogfooding?

vanitalo,
@vanitalo@mastodon.social avatar

@stroughtonsmith If Apple won’t enable virtualisation on the iPad Pro, they should make real touchscreen MacBooks.

I wouldn’t buy any version of the iPad (other than the mini) if Apple made touchscreen MacBooks that also support Apple Pencil.

I don’t think iPadOS will ever meet my computing needs unless Apple adds a lot more macOS style capabilities.

@9to5Mac I have this monitor setup at the moment. All are 4K monitors, but running at scaled resolutions. I’d go blind if I had to read text at native 4K 😜

I prefer a resolution closer to 1600p as the text still looks reasonably sharp and large enough so I don't have to squint, and it provides a little more vertical screen resolution than 1440p.

the only consumer AI gadget worth making is glasses

There are very few spots on the average human body to put anything else that aren't already occupied. And it's the perfect place for a camera.

That's your niche, and you have a countdown clock until Apple and Google arrive with real ecosystems in tow. That gives you maybe 5 years of runway before you have to ‘compete’

vanitalo,
@vanitalo@mastodon.social avatar

@stroughtonsmith I agree that glasses would be ideal, but current technology isn’t really up to the task yet and may not be for another decade. In the interim I’d like AI watches to be take a more prominent place.

iPad has probably had the most dramatic shift of all of Apple's platforms, since its inception. It began as doing very few things to a very high quality, but now it does almost everything, badly. I hope history finds it to have been more than just an incubator for Apple's Mac silicon during the wayward years

vanitalo,
@vanitalo@mastodon.social avatar

@stroughtonsmith Totally agree! iPadOS is the problem. It’s a waste of time putting an M4 processor in an iPad. If Apple doesn’t make iPadOS more capable like macOS the hardware will never live up to its potential.
