Apple’s Workaround for the ITC’s Import Ban on Apple Watch Series 9 and Ultra 2: Disabling the Blood-Oxygen Sensor in Software

robmille,

@daringfireball Just a SPECTACULAR and well deserved take down of a very poor job by that WSJ guy writing the column of a random bird/egg icon on twitter, and not a paid journalist let alone someone at the WSJ to be on the Apple Beat. Total buffoonery by that guy. Not sure if that's a 1-off or he's just that bad at his job every day.

robmille,

@daringfireball @gruber im curious if you’ve heard what happens to someone that buys a watch with the sensor disabled in the us only when they travel abroad? Does that sensor work outside the states? I assume someone the buys a watch in Canada will still have the o2 working when they visit the states. Probably unknown till court rules?

@robmille I've asked but Apple hasn't answered any questions about how they'll deal with this. Even the fact that they’ve created a software fix to disable the sensors is a leak, not something they've announced.

@daringfireball It's unclear from the reporting whether the software update will be applied to previously sold watches or just new ones in the stores. Unless I missed something.

@daringfireball @gruber how are they allowed to remove a headline feature in a software update for paying customers? What are they expecting to happen here?

delric,
@delric@mastodon.social avatar

@kavehv @daringfireball @gruber Thought I read elsewhere it’s for new watches being imported in, not already sold watches.

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@delric @kavehv I believe that's the case, and I think it's the only reason why it took Apple a while to come up with a solution.

kavehv,
@kavehv@mastodon.social avatar

@gruber @delric So what happens if you have to get your watch replaced under warranty?
