@daringfireball I mean, that’s generally how bug reporting works — users negatively impacted by a bug notice it and raise a flag. This is how we discover unexpected edge cases

While some American universities remove peace demonstrators by force, Chancellor of UC Riverside, Kim Wilcox, peacefully reached an agreement with protestors, on how to ensure university investments and university study abroad programs are brought in line with university ethics standards. An agreement which specifically mentions the ending of programs in Israel.

The students have decided to end their protest, as can be seen in the attached video. Full agreement text:
https://documents.ucr.edu/chancellor/May_3_ammended-agreement.pdf

delric,
@delric@mastodon.social avatar

@FrankFrank @jhavok @randahl it isn’t a misuse of the word. Israeli officials have been quoted saying Palestine shouldn’t exist. They bomb cities indiscriminately, and documented cases specifically targeting civilians, women, and children. That isn’t collateral damage, it’s collective punishment of an entire people. Thus, genocide.

@daringfireball what I dont get about Siri is…why it degrades over time. My new HomePods for example. It was fast. Now, when I issue a common command to activate a HomeKit scene, it sits & spins. Worse, if I’m watching ATV while doing this, it mutes my video’s audio until it figures out the command. Why does it do this?? I have rippin’ internet.

@daringfireball as for Gurman’s “remarkable” achievement…here’s the thing — Babe Ruth actually did a thing. Mark Gurman just tells other people what someone told him. Kinda puts achievement in perspective.

Today I got my first community violation on TikTok. It was a video about Timothy McVeigh and the Oklahoma City Bombing that went on for minutes but failed to mention that McVeigh was a far right Republican white supremacist. That seemed like a pretty stark omission to me, so I left the fact as a comment. First, I was flooded by hateful responses. Then TikTok deleted the comment and issued me a “strike.” I appealed and was denied. I doubt a human ever reviewed it.

delric,
@delric@mastodon.social avatar

@fraying what do you expect from a Chinese-run property? Freedom of speech? TikTok’s Chinese owner already used it to spy on US journalists:

And the CCP used TikTok spied on pro-democracy protesters in Hong Kong:

@gruber @dmitriid @rvcx Bogus charge. For you writer & journalist types, your name is your brand and livelihood. For most of us it isn’t and we have employers who may not like our positions and thus jeopardize our livelihoods. Anonymity is crucial to not silence the speech. Also, women and those in vulnerable positions don’t have your privilege. So c’mon man, get off that bulljive.

A bit of weirdness I hadn't noticed before. While you can on free text now, it won't find links. Meanwhile, the Trending/Explore view has the "News" section which will only show links (along with metadata like "125 people shared", but not the toots themselves).

So Mastodon will recommend you links people talk about, but will obscure the talk itself. Do I have to explain the ways in which this can be actively harmful?

delric,
@delric@mastodon.social avatar

@osma hey I just want linked mastodon posts to preview and open in the mobile app I’m in, not a browser modal. is that so much
